What did I like as a kid?
-
Hey guys! I wanted to share this here and see if anyone else has stumbled into this when making art for kids...
There have been times in my illustration journey where I get so into the weeds on technique and artistic ability that I feel I'm losing sight of why and what I'm making.
So in an attempt to reconnect, I've asked myself "what did I like as a kid?" (and also as an adult who is still very kid-like )
And here is my effort to answer that question:
P.S. I know I'm revealing my age a bit with these haha so I'm 26 and am very much a product of the early spongebob, rugrats, and nickelodeon days - in case you were wondering
I wonder do any of you have mood boards like this - where you explore which books, movies, characters or series had a big impact on you and your artistic endeavors?
If so, I'd love to see that!

@Kristen-Lango I am 35 and still very much love all of the above! Donβt have any mood boards thoughβ¦

@Kristen-Lango I do t have any mood boards like this but I can tell you I also loved Snowmen at Night. Another one of my favorites is a picture book called Tuesday by David Weisner. Itβs about these frogs that hover around on their lily pads at night. Itβs bizarre and fantastic

@Griffin That sounds awesome! rents it from the library immediately
-
@Kristen-Lango The Monster at the End of This Book is so great. It was my favorite book as a child, and my kids always requested it when they were younger. It has stood the test of time.
-
@Kim-Rosenlof haha definitely! Same here! I don't have kids but I loved it so much when I was young. I don't know many other books that captured that suspense as intensely as Grover did
-
What a fun concept! Seems like a great way to tap back into your childhood headspace. I definitely see a bunch of familiar faces in your board. It's hard to fit all the books and shows that had an impact on me into one image, but here's a smattering of some of the ones I remember making a mark when I was younger.
I'll be looking back to this for a little inspiration boost when I'm making my next piece. Thanks again for the idea!

@Mike-Marttila Happy to be of some use to you and your creative journey I loved looking at yours! It's so cool to see the things that stuck with other creatives
-
Hey guys! In keeping with this thread I've been collecting images of the covers of my favorite books I've recently rented from the library. Hope you enjoy seeing this - I'd love to know your recommendations for what else I should check out
-
@Kristen-Lango Thanks It is great to see as I don't see American books or even libraries!
-
You know, I was about to comment here all disappointed because I never read children's books as a kid. But now I'm actually really inspired from seeing everyone else's mood boards.
-
@Kristen-Lango I am now collecting images to make one of these boards.
-
@Patricia-Dishmon Yes, I am like you. I mainly consumed cartoons, comics and movies so my board will reflect this.
-
@PenAndrew That's awesome!! I'm glad I could get the ball rolling
-
Here is my mood board! @PenAndrew it's mostly cartoons! I threw a couple of dolls in there lol
I went for things that I LOVED as a kid vs things I enjoyed or just kinda liked. I chose things that made my kid brain go haywire. They inspired me to be creative back then and still do now!

Here's more of an illustrator that appeared at the end of my childhood but I loved and his work bridged comics with children's books. That's probably why I loved the idea of doing both. I discovered most of my love of children's books through my nephews and nieces. I really love Tony Ross's illustrations. I found this old copy of Jim and The Beanstalk. Anthony Brown is the king of animal illustrations. -
@PenAndrew Love the Gruffalo and Scheffler's work!

This is such a good idea! Something I've been thinking about lately is how who we were as children is often the most authentic version of who we are. So I just had to put together my own mood board! It's funny looking back on everything I loved. My parents were anti-television, so mostly it's just books. (though I did occasionally watch movies at my grandma's house!)

I like this idea, it keeps inspired and on track plus it is just so much fun to muse through all the creative work.
Thanks for posting and have fun with your studies.

@Robert-Henderson @kirsten-mcg I'm glad you both like the idea! It's great to see what others were influenced by, thanks for sharing!
