So I was watching last month’s crit while working on my submission for this month when I realized I was doing another standard point of view. So I started over and came up with this piece which was quite challenging for me. But I am happy with how it turned out.

This is my first illustration submission. It's a bit of a different style from most of the work on here, but I love this community, the podcasts, the courses, feedback, etc, so I thought I'd start entering the monthly contests. I considered adding color but decided to keep it in black and white. It was done originally in pen and ink, traditionally, then I scanned it and added a few digital revisions.

It's about the things we try to protect our kids from, their imaginings at night, sure, but more powerfully, the hurt of the world. As a foster parent, this is something I experience a lot-- trying to shield these little ones from further trauma.

Here's my first ever entry - created with watercolour and oil pastels. My image is part of a story about a boy who has gone to bed poorly. The thief snickered at how easy it was to break into the mansion at nightfall. The garage was left wide open. He snatched and looted stealthily, stuffing his backpack. Grinning, he slipped out the front door. And met his worst nightmare - Super Skunk.
