@Jordi-Ventura Aahhh I love how you executed the dragonfly! And your character is adorable! Absolutely loving the textures as well. Well done!

Already so many great takes on this! It was kinda inevitable I would be going down the meganeura (giant prehistoric dragonfly type insect) route on this one - I have two young kids who are in that real intense prehistory/dinosaur phase! So I ended up thinking Jurassic Park for insects, mashed up with a vintage travel poster for said destination...and here we are. If you look closely you’ll see that the near future for our tourists looks similarly...uh...exciting...to the original...!Meganeuradone.jpg

I don’t know why the quality appears so bad on the preview of the image in this post, I guess maybe it is just too big and condensed down, but if you click on it you can see it at a higher quality!

Zoe had never seen a fire breathing dragonfly before.
Updated- The coloring was bothering me so I touched it up.

*Updated post. I wasn't happy with the main character's wings so I did a bit of adjusting.
Here's my entry for Dragonfly. A shameful overuse of textures but it's my first illustration practising Procreate on an iPad 4 - so please go easy on me! 😆

@StudioLooong this looks so good. Your lighting looks wonderful. Makes for a nice silhouette.

Wearing a mask during this pandemic also keeps dragonflies from sewing your mouth shut when telling lies!

Originally had a whole different thing going for this and got about 3/4 of the way through when at some mysterious point the top three layers merged (a problem for my overpaint-and-clean-it-later approach). I took it as a sign to pivot to the new concept my brain tossed out mid-shading on the old piece and ended up here.

Just curious as to why nearly every illustration seems developed for children or a children's market? Is SVS specifically aimed at illustration for children? Did I miss that? Thanks! 🙂

Here's my entry... thanks for everyone for the feedback! I struggled a bit on how exactly to crop it. This seemed to feel the best to me personally of the 2-3 different crops on the original.

This illustration depicts Clara Driscoll, the designer behind the Tiffany Lamp, sketching in Central Park. LC Tiffany was a decorative artist in the 1900's Art Nouveau style. Mucha, another artist of that era, inspired my color choices. The sketches in the foreground are based on drawings she made to create the famous Dragonfly Tiffany Lamp.

@fpichel They do tend to lean more toward children's illustration and that is what the majority or students are pursuing but any entries are welcome. Lee, Will, and Jake have said that these concepts are just to help you build portfolio pieces so you should create images that will help strengthen your body of work. It is hard to win the contest if it's outside the children's illustration realm though since the students get to vote so it leans more children's style most of the time.
