Hi everyone, I’m John.
I’m in my late 30s and have been getting back into art after doing nothing more than the occasional drawing for the last 20 years or so.
It’s nice to be able to say here (where my boss will never read it!) that I’d love to go pro or semi-pro at some point, but I know I’ve got a long way to go! I’ve been doing SVS courses and others for about a year and wanted to join the forum to find like-minded people and get some honest opinions on my work.
I’ve never joined a community like this before so I’d love some tips for getting started, what I should get involved in, that kind of thing. Any tips?

Welcome John! I would definitely search the forum on posts about the class assignments you might be doing and participate in the monthly contests on the forum.

@chrisaakins thanks Chris. The way I look at it, I’ve been working for the last 14 years since university but I’m going to be working for another 30 or so, so I might as well find something great to do with the time!

Hi John, I’ve just turned 41. I have been doing the same as you, following the courses and then joining the forum. I was meant to do animation/illustration at uni but ended up doing graphic design. After 20 years of being the graphic designer that was given all of the illustration jobs I’ve decided to pursue my actual original ambition of being an illustrator. I feel a bit like I’m playing catch-up but joining the forum is one of the best things I’ve done. I’m still not that confident on commenting on others work but the support, advice and help on here from others is wonderful.

@lizardillo good to know I’m not the only one! I keep thinking back to my decision (influenced by my parents) to study something more ‘academic’ than art at university and how that led me one way in my career when I probably should have gone another way. Anyway, it’s not too late, and I’m glad I’m on the right track now, even though there’s sooo much to learn!
I imagine your graphic design experience is a good starting point for getting into illustration, so good luck to you. Hopefully see you around the forum!
