Thought I'd mention that I'm featuring Lee's fall 2020 book THIS PRETTY PLANET on my various social media feeds this week. Each day I'll feature a different interesting illustration choice that I've notice throughout the book.

      Today -- the cover!
Pop over and feel free to violently agree or disagree with my conclusions.๐Ÿ”ชโ›“

Thursday's Topic: When is a wavy blue stripe meandering across a spread waaaay more than just a wavy blue stripe meandering across a spread?

When it literally TELLS THE STORY (that the text isn't)!IMG_2184.JPG

Friday's Topic: When an illustrator twists the authors words on them (for the best storytelling results)IMG_2185.JPG

@davidhohn It is fascinating to see how images tell stories. The billowing smoke and concerned faces do seem to be "spinning through space" on this pretty planet. Not until you pointed out what the illustrator did was I aware of the visual work that Lee White breathed into the author's line.

@Becky totally agree! I know when I first saw this spread (and @Lee-White had chatted with me about the storyline he was constructing for this book) I just thought-- "Damn, that's a power move!" Because based on listening to the original song the author never thought of the line this way.
