This one took me 9 hours from sketch to finish.

My Tribute Copy

Hi all,
As a Mexican American, my family celebrates Day of the Dead in honor of our lost loved ones. I painted the cover of The Art of Coco as a master copy since I absolutely love the movie and the art.
I did this master copy last night. I didn’t copy the cover exactly, but just stayed very loose. This was done in procreate with no after effect filters.
I’m proud of this study.

Hi all!
Continuing on with my original thread started in Nov 2019 with more master copies. These are from The Day The Crayons Quit, illustrated by Oliver Jeffers and written by Drew Daywalt. Originals on top.

@Jeremy-Ross These are really good!!
-
Thank you @Kevin-Longueil! I suppose this is the closest thing to asking the artist directly, “How did you make this?”
Here’s another from the amazing Cori Doerrfeld, author/illustrator of The Rabbit Listened. Such a powerful book with underlying message of coping with loss. My daughter has a lionhead rabbit as a pet and she definitely brings her comfort.
Original on top.

And another! Original is on top.

Here’s a quick study of Oh No! I love this book!

I have to admit, this master copy of Lee White’s, This Pretty Planet was pretty difficult. It was fun trying to get in Lee’s head while copying his masterpiece.
Lee’s original is on top, my copy on bottom.

Wow really great Jeremy!
-
Thanks @Asyas_illos! Now the real challenge, making my own pieces this good!
-
@Jeremy-Ross Hi. This looks close, overall colour seems just off. Not sure how you;d alter it but, one easy fix I think you missed is in the yellow flowers in the bottom left have inside lines (Lee White's) and yours are just solid. If you'd like me to see if I can spot others let me know. You did a good job!
-
Thank you @Heather-Boyd! I think I got to the point feeling like “enough, finished not perfect!” Lee’s a master!
-
Hi Gang, back again with master studies!
This time it’s the beautiful cover from The Art Of UP painted by the extremely talented Ricky Nierva.
I had some free time this weekend and decided to give it a go.

@jeremy-ross Great to see the master studies continuing!
And I don't know how I missed that one you did of Lee's Pretty Planet, but boy did you nail that one! -
What a fabulous idea. I used to cut magazine adds in half, and fill in the other side. Thanks for the inspiration to do some cover copies. I’ll share when I have something done!
-
Thank you @davidhohn, these studies take me out of my comfort zone; however, they are relaxing way to spend the afternoon while learning “brand spanking” new each time (smile).
-
Thank you @angelinakizz! That sounds like great practice for editorial work!
-
These are great. I keep having to go back and checking which ones are the originals!
-
Thank you much @lizardillo!
I find these master studies extremely helpful in pushing my skills and exploring brush strokes I’m not comfortable with quite yet. The goal is to absorb as much as possible and use techniques from these amazing artists in my own work, which is very hard.
Art is so hard!

OH wow @Jeremy-Ross .. I haven't looked at these in while. You are getting SO good. I had to keep checking to see which were the originals. I love seeing your progress! Keep sharing!!
