I listen to a HUGE variety, from movie and film soundtracks to Rap, from Cowboy music to Monty Python songs, from Pink Floyd to Mariachi... it depends on how I am feeling that day. Sometimes you need something to get the blood going, so I have varieties of dance music, (disco, hip hop, swing,) and rock anthems. I love doo wop, opera, I love Amy Winehouse, Barry White... I just about like everything... And of course there are the classics - The Beatles & Elvis.

I am working on a piece for a friend of her super hero/villain character she used to play in a game we met in about 5 years ago. We're friends in real life now, and I am doing a new version because my style has gotten better, and I play nothing but James Bond theme songs doing that one.

I will post it later when I can find the file.

EDIT, here is the file. The top left are the 4 characters from the game, as drawn by the game engine. The top right is my original done in 2009 I believe to the soundtracks of all the James Bond movies. The bottom left is the sketch I did about 3 months ago, and the last piece is where I left it... I have to get back to it, once I start to feel better.

The weird thing is when I am sad or incredibly angry, I play Hawaiian music. If my family hears that, they know to leave me alone. I play it because it cheers me up... how can anyone be mad listening to a slide guitar...

@Leontine This is the first song of Olafur Arnalds that I heard over two years ago. I wish it were an hour longer. It's so great to draw to!

@Lynn Larson I listen to Christ Oatley too! I really enjoy his podcast. Have you listened to the Stories Unbound one?

@Sarah LuAnn I think I might have to give jazz a try when drawing.

@Bobby Aquitania Hawaiian music? What in the world? haha, but I can see what you're saying. I hope you get feeling better soon!

@Bobby-Aquitania You are singing my tune...music wise I jam to a lot of different songs. From the Eagles to Eminem to Disturbed to Bon Jovi to Mumford and Sons to Otis Redding to Joni Mitchell to Bruno Mars to Stevie Nicks to Shovels and Rope. It's an endless mix of awesome!

And I do also listen to various art podcasts, so much great stuff out there!

My parents and family were voracious music buffs, and I couldn't imagine working without it... after all, variety is the spice of life they say.

Edit: Charlie - I'd kill to see Joni Mitchell live, she is my all time favorite. I've seen Stevie Nicks, she does not disappoint. So sad to hear about Glen Frey's passing, I grew up on the Eagles.

Shinji: I'm not mad anymore... had 5 teeth pulled yesterday as a preventive mesaure against my chemo treatment. But that is a small price to pay for being alive. Hopefully in 6 weeks I will have some partials to eat solid food again. Not that I can't now, it's just annoying.

If you are looking for something relaxing to listen to while working, I would say pick a genre, then make yourself a mix. I prefer to make the piece have a matching theme. I have a Disney folder of songs I listen to for SVS, it kind of puts me in the mood for the work we do here.

If I'm caricaturing a musician, I'll listen to them throughout the full process. If not, I'll either listen to podcasts of sing along to anything from Michael Jackson to heavy rock.

@Ace-Connell Is it strange that I'm not surprised that you listen to that when I see your caricatures? It kind of has that punch/edginess/contrast.

@Leontine Just checking out Mister & Mississippi now, they really remind me of Of Monsters and Men (one of my favs!) Good stuff 🙂

As for me - I also listen to a lot of podcasts, but when I do listen to music it's usually indie - indie rock, indie pop, indie folk- love east coast sounding music (although I live on the west coast!) - the kind you'd want to get up and dance around in circles too with linked arms. I'm also a sucker for really epic movie soundtracks... Harry Potter, LOTR, Labryinth, Donnie Darko, anything Andrew Lloyd Weber, etc.

I like random, so I just put on the radio, but if I have enough (which is quickly enough), I just put on ambiant sounds
or... ahem... I like listening to @Will-Terry 's voice while working 😃 I find it motivating. So I play the SVS classes or his youtube videos. am I weird? lol

Like others have mentioned, I like to listen to music on Spotify. It shuffles through the music for me without having to go searching, nor take me away from my work.

This is actually how I found the bands, Sleeping At Last & ODESZA I like to listen to them the most while drawing. Really gets my imagination flowing, plus most of their songs are rather calming. 🙂

@audrey-dowling I listen to @Will-Terry as well while working. Definitely helpful with tips to keep in mind while creating. Not weird! Or maybe we both are. Haha :3

@shinjifujioka Have you heard of Eisley? They are in similar vein to the Gabrielle Aplin song you posted.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uITNbUWK3iU (sometimes I just put this album on repeat and paint for a few hours)

and this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7z5mPOqyTlo (one of the saddest songs ever imo--and great to paint to)

I like to listen very melodic stuff like that, sometimes heavier dubstep (have to be in the right mood), heavy rock (crazy stuff like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4sZhL_8WL4&list=PL79ZUqe2WN259LrQj7UJ50cNgaEYpF-yQ&index=7).

However, for a while know I've been listening to various audiobooks, science/social podcasts and youtube channels. Stumbled upon Milton Friedmen recently on Youtube and I've been thinking about his ideas as I paint.

I find that if I'm in the drawing/design stage I have to listen to music--I can't listen to spoken word because I won't process any of it. That initial planing stage is always such a struggle and I have to concentrate. When I get to the coloring/rendering stage I can kinda go into autopilot and pay more attention to words.
