AUGUST CONTEST: It's the first day of school for Albert!
-
@LisaF I hope I’m asking this in the right place… if not, please point me in the right direction. How does it work if I wanted to sell prints of the art I create for critique arena? Or what if someone wanted to make a book of all their entries? Are those things allowed? Would we need to credit SVS learn since it’s your prompt idea? I’m new here so maybe this has already been talked about someplace?
-
When is the deadline for this contest? Is it the end of August?
-
Thank you @NicolaSchofield! I was going for the nervous distant shot.
-
Hi @keithryanstudio, good question!
In short, you own your work and can do with it as you please. I’m sharing an excerpt from the terms & conditions below and a link to the full terms for your perusal.
Good luck!
“We do not own the rights to your work, you do! But we reserve the right to promote your work on our online platforms. Contest entries maybe promoted on critiquearena.com and SVSLearn.com, and their associated email lists and social media.”
-
Yes @Frost-Drive, 31 August.
Good luck!
-
@keithryanstudio yup, @Jeremy-Ross is right! You created the art, you own it, it's yours to do with as you please If you wanted to make a book of your art, have at it! Sure we'd love credit, but it's totally up to you Welcome!

I've run out of time to work on this prompt and won't be submitting to the Arena, but I wanted to share as far as I got. Next weekend, I hope to finish the monsters (the grey silhouettes) and play around with the layers. But for now, here is "The First Day of Monster School."
-
OK! I learned my lesson last month to put this out there rather than leave things till the last minute and not have anyone see it! lol. Comments welcome!
It's not quite finished yet, and I've done it as a spread.
-
These are all so great!
-
Okay, here is mine
-
@Janette I really love your Albert character!
-
@KathrynAdebayo Haha, whoops guys. I just realized that penguins don't live in the arctic. They're only in the southern hemisphere. A good lesson on researching thoroughly before submitting something!
-
Trying a different color study.
-
@Jeremy-Ross The colors on the second one say it's fall and time to go back to school!

It was my birthday last week so I gifted myself a little time (but alas not enough!) to take part this month. A little plea for the prompt to come in earlier next month!
My Albert is a pine marten who has hitherto led a very quiet life, but over the summer holidays he made friends with Lizzie, a little human girl. She finds school hard and prefers to be out exploring the woods, but maybe Albert’s enthusiasm for making friends and finding the fun in the classroom will prove infectious? When I was drawing this I was thinking of late summer and early autumn mornings when the weather is balanced between warmth and chill. It’s a UK primary school, hence the uniforms and the small, more higgledy piggledy school buildings.
I tried to show both them looking into the playground and their view of the playground at the same time. Not sure if that worked really, and I definitely didn’t manage to allocate the preferred 80/20 distribution for the details but hey, I actually finished something, which is the beauty of the monthly contest for me as my chances to draw are squeezed between study and work and my family!
Loving the different takes so far and looking forward to seeing what comes in as the deadline looms!

Taking it down to the wire again! Here's my entry for Alberts first day at school. Any feedback would be appreciated... been second-guessing myself on the comp and values.
So glad I started doing these, definitely learning a lot. Good luck everyone!

@Iain-Davidson My Latin teacher in Middle school wore that exact same sleeveless jumper! I love this concept, I think it's great!
