Effective Vehicle Design - Assignment 1A
-
Hi, all! I'm slowly getting through the first assignment for Shane Hunt's class. I've never drawn a vehicle in my life, but after watching the class on perfecting your children's portfolio, I realised I needed to get a start on filling in my knowledge gap asap
Four cars later and I'm super-duper happy!!
Part A of Assignment #1 is about pushing a car design into four different but recognisable caricatures. What do you all think? Did I push it enough? Can you tell the personality of each car? I'd love to hear your thoughts and feedback.

Super late response but..... This is fantastic! I can totally see some unifying forms and patterns in all of them. I think one thing that sort of estranges the bottom left one is the squareness of the windows/spare tire. This being said, I'd say you either could've pushed the others a little more or pushed this one slightly less in the unifying aspects like roundness, etc. All in all I really do love these designs, they're really fun and have a ton of character.

@Tristan-Lapetz Thank you so much for the feedback, Tristan, I really appreciate your insights! (and, woah, sorry for not seeing this sooner). I do feel like the 3rd, square-ish one does feel like he's from his own universe. I purposely made him as square as I could, but since the others didn't get their own shape language, I guess he does stand out.
I wouldn't mind doing this exercise again, it was unexpectedly fun drawing vehicles ^.^

You’ve made vehicles look fun to draw which is a huge huge thing, coming from someone that never was interested in them beyond pickle car. So good!

@HeatherB Oh, excellent! It made such a difference watching Shane draw and seeing that it isn't some mythical, magical process (start with a reference, make a really basic rough, and go from there).
I really enjoyed the concept design section where you throw together a bunch of shapes to come up with a cool silhouette. That was eye-opening for me and could easily be used for character and set design as well.
