Dream Portfolio - Style Question
-
I recently watched a video by Anna Daviscourt about developing her style while she was on the Adobe Creative Residency, which led me to the style lesson here on SVS led by @Lee-White. I got really inspired and excited to put my own together and was wondering if anyone could give me their thoughts on whether or not these inspirations could be combined in a commercially viable way for children's books.
The assignment was to pick 20 pieces of artwork that you love, that lines up with what you want to do. Unfortunately I'm cursed with being interested in a really broad range of work from the all areas of design.
What I'm initially seeing from these pieces is that I like pieces with cute/whimsical stylised characters with linework present, cinematic lighting and compositions, natural looking textures, and a clear separation between the characters/focal points and the background.
Apologies for the essay. Next year I'm hoping to really push myself with my illustration work, and build a children's book portfolio. I hoping that this analysis/breakdown can help my portfolio look a lot more cohesive.
Any thoughts on whether these could be combined in a commercially viable way? (for children's books)
P.S If anyone wants to know the artists' names, feel free to ask.

@brettb_draws there’s a lot of variety in children’s books, I wouldn’t worry too much about wether or not your style will work at this point. There’s also no way of knowing what the combined style of all of these works would look like. I’d say just focus on doing studies and really tune into the specific aspects that you like in each artist’s style.

@brettb_draws I definitely think these would be viable in the children's book market! I would recommend doing Lee's next recommendation of choosing you're favorite 8 of these and one of your own pieces and putting them together in a square grid with yours in the middle so you can see where your work falls short.
Also I have found it really helpful to do the assignment you just did once a year or more as my tastes change or I realize I don't like DOING one of those styles even though it's so pretty

@Griffin @carlianne Thanks for the advice with this ! I really appreciate it, it feels much less overwhelming showing this to another pair of eyes. I can tell that this is gonna take a lot of work, and trial and error, but I'm sure it'll be worth it when I get there. Thanks again !
