So, I am working on a middle grade fiction novel. (The reason I’m in SVS is because I want to be able to illustrate my stories. I have a ton of them.) I’m currently about 40,000 words in and grabbing up any resource I can find on leveling up my writing skills. I’m a huge Brandon Sanderson fan and I discovered just this last week that he has an entire lecture series available for free from the class he teaches at BYU! Anybody who is trying to write fiction could benefit from this. It is so so good. Every class has been major lightbulbs for me. Thought I’d send the link out for any of you who are trying to tackle the writing thing too.

I was actually wondering if @Jake-Parker and @Will-Terry knew about this since they have also been teachers at BYU? I think it’s a big school though…

@Pamela-Fraley I actually started watching the 1st lecture a while back (2020 or 2021). I keep wanting to finish them, but have had a lot of projects for work, so I haven't finished it yet. It is good to hear that they are worth the time to watch. I am reading his Mistborn series for the second time now (It is long enough ago that I can't remember it that well - thus a second time 😂), and I really enjoy his writing.

I've seen those and watched a bit of a few of them. I wouldn't call myself a writer but I'm starting to dabble.

One resource I enjoy is Kathleen Jennings blog where she shows off a lot of different writing exercises that look like a lot of fun. A good blog to follow.

@Kim-Rosenlof They are really good. Even just the lecture on his strategy for plot. I’ve never heard it put the way that he puts it and it makes so much sense!
Mist born is great. My son is having me read the Skyward books right now, so I’m in the middle of that one. I’m just blown away at the sheer amount of writing Brandon is able to accomplish. It’s mind boggling.

@Pamela-Fraley Hi, Pamela thanks for sharing the writing resource. I will definitely checking them out. I am currently writing an MG novel as a practice for my writing skill. I am about 5000 words in, so still in a very early stage.

@Blitz55 I will check that out!! I think there’s actually a lot of us on here that are both writers and illustrators… Or at least we want to be.😆

I'm a little late to this thread, but I wanted to mention that if you're a Brandon Sanderson fan he also has a short-form podcast on writing called Writing Excuses: https://writingexcuses.com/

Each episode is about 15 minutes long and Brandon (plus a few friends) quickly discuss some approaches to a particular craft topic (e.g. "Pacing With Chapters"). They're fun for some quick, bit-sized food for thought on writing.
