Tips for making art process videos
-
Hi, everyone.
I need some advice on shooting drawing/painting process. I am doing a couple of books with mix-media approach. I will draw and paint part of the images in traditional media and I really want to document the process, mainly for showing my process, and maybe interesting as part of the book promotion next year.I am not interested in documenting everything. I am more interested in how to tell a good story with video about my process of making books.
Anyone came across good tutorials for art video documentations, or good examples of how other artists do it?

This is the process I use to make Instagram reels, and it's not too complicated but is interesting to watch. I take short video snippets while I am painting, just 20-30 seconds mostly, highlighting the most interesting parts of painting. Then I take those into iMovie and cut them down a bit more, and use transitions to help them blend together well. It's simple, but a good way to document the evolution of the illustration. You can check out my Instagram account and watch a reel or two if you want an example of what the finished video looks like. My account is @kirsten.mcgonigal.art. Good luck!

Hi @xin-li, I think Anoosha does a great job with this on her YouTube channel.

@kirsten-mcg I love your process video, Kirsten. So well done! I will try your process for sure.
Do you have tips for making a routine to remember taking videos? I am quite forgetful once I started painting. -
@Jeremy-Ross thank you so much for the link. I am looking into it now.

@xin-li so sorry I just saw this! I've been busy with summer travel, so I'm falling behind social media lately! I know what you mean about being forgetful once you start painting. It's hard to interrupt that flow! Sometimes I set a timer on my phone, which helps. But there are definitely times when I've started out videoing and then just completely forgotten to keep recording!
