Possibly controversial question here? RE: finding an agent
-
Hello everyone.
So I have recently been working on queries and submissions to find agency representation.
As I’m reading through the bios for agency websites, I’m finding that there are a lot out there putting emphasis on diversity representation and LGBTQ+ representation among their creators.
Although I consider myself to be an ally and overall open-minded person, I am straight white male. I want to be careful about not giving the wrong idea here in that I’m complaining or that I’m in any way saying this is unfair. It is not. I’m simply wondering if it is best to just move along, because I am just not what those particular agencies are looking for? I am willing to take on any project that puts the spotlight on diversity and LGBTQ representation, but I also think that might also come off as patronizing. Thoughts?

@jvartandillustration I think they put this on their website as a way to communicate that people of color or LGBTQ+ should feel comfortable applying as well. I've never personally read this as "white people need not apply as they are not what we're looking for". They do still sign a lot of straight white male artists so you should go for it!

@NessIllustration Thank you for the response. I like your thought. I suppose it’s just like any other query. The worst that can happen is they either kindly reject you, or you don’t get any response at all.

For the most part I think it's still all about the work so if your work is good none of that other stuff really matters. I did have a friend who fell into a couple of those sought after groups who got picked up by an agent before she was really ready skill wise (in my opinion) However I'm not sure if that was really a good thing or actually ended up being stressful for her. But regardless I wouldn't worry about it to much. (BTW males are probably a minority in children's book illustration so maybe you got something there XD)
