What's Your Mission?
-
Hi all,
I recently downloaded Jake's new 2024 planner and followed along with his livestream to learn the process. I have been a haphazard planner/scheduler over the years and I want 2024 to be a more focused year for me.
But how to write the mission statement? How do I take the million nebulous ideas I have and put them into a cohesive statement?
After some brainstorming, I've decided that with my limited time outside work, the thing I always come back to is feeling unprepared for the possible projects that float ambiguously in my head. So, I've decided that this year should be a Preparation year for me. In other words, research and development. I will read lots of books, write lots of reflections, and draw lots of studies. I also want to keep up with the How to Fix Your Art prompts because it's been a great rhythm for me so far.
So here's the mission: I want to develop my skills as a writer and illustrator by studying the written word, doing a monthly illustration, and picking a new drawing topic to study regularly.
What are some of your thoughts going into the new year? Has anyone else written their mission for 2024? I'd love to read what everyone else is thinking!

@skeletortoise I don’t know if I have a mission statement for the year, but I did create my own planner/journal for the year. I have the monthly calendar, then weekly schedule, then daily journal pages. I’m hoping by keeping everything in the same place it’ll be easier to look back at progress and goals and how hard I had to work to make progress. I also hope my kids will think it’s interesting when I’m ancient.

@ksfabian That last point is great; I would so love to see my parents' planners/journals for decades ago. What a great artifact to leave behind!

@skeletortoise Years ago, after my grandparents died, my mother had all their letters from forever, because people used to write a ton more letters than they do today. She had me scan every letter and organize it both digitally and physically into binders. It was cool to read my grandma's early college life through dating and marrying my grandpa and then her struggles as a new mom. It was interesting to hear about my great uncle who died when my mom was very young. I have always kept a journal since I was a teenager, but having other glimpses into who my grandparents were and what life was like in the 40s and 50s was really cool.
