      Hi!

It's been a while, but I've been a busy bee working away. I'm working on my first picture book commission, and I just finished a 5 week mentorship on character design with the incredible Carlos Grangel.

While it still has a few flaws, I wanted to share a few pieces I did for the mentorship. One of the biggest things I struggle with is finding stronger movement in my characters, so that's my plan for practicing over the summer. I'd love any suggestions on finding more movement, classes, videos, etc. I use the line of action, but still end up stiff. I've drawn out hundreds of potato sacks, and still... stiff when it comes to adding human form.

Hi! I really like this character and I would love to know the story behind some of these poses!
My immediate thought is to push the pose further in the angles of action. For example, I took your middle pose, and sketched out the bare bones, then went over it again just exaggerating and extending the angles. I tend to have to push a pose really far and dial it back in, otherwise it's easy to play it safe and end up looking more stiff than you want.
Secondly this character has another character built in... her hair! There is a lot of freedom to use the hair to show motion and direction, and even contrast the body's pose for added emphasis.
Hope this gives you some ideas of what I see 🙂

@jahn thanks so much Jahn! That definitely helps! I have been rewatching the figure drawing and gesture drawing classes in level 2, and I plan on really working on poses this summer. Your drawing definitely helped take her to a more dynamic pose than I achieved! Thanks
