OK Everyone, this one is a little trickier than the last two. The prompt for this month's contest is: INDEPENDENT.

This is broad enough that you have to bring your own interpretation to the topic. There isn't one direction we are looking for. It can be simple or broad and you can choose how it plays out. I LOVE prompts like this because I have to dig deep with what I think the term means. This encourages very divergent thinking and the images typically come out a little more creative for it. I hope you find it rewarding.

Here's the specs: NOTE: Please put your real name AND svs forum name ON THE IMAGE. This saves us a lot of time in the end when trying to give credit. It also allows others to quickly see who did the work later if they grab your image for reference, etc.

One more big change: KEEP THIS THREAD FOR FINAL IMAGES ONLY. create another thread for work in progress pics, sketches, etc. It gets too confusing if it's all shown in one thread

      RULES:
-Post your final illustration in this thread
      -One entry per person
-File size no more than 1200 pixels on the longest side
-Don’t forget to include your name AND SVS name ON THE IMAGE so we can give you credit!
-Only submit if you are OK with us posting your image on social media
-Post by July 31 at midnight.

      PRIZES:
-1st place: free one month subscription
      -2nd runner up: SVS t-shirt
-honorable mentions: the chance to bask in the limelight

      Good luck!

I'm guessing the theme coincides with the month when we celebrate U.S. independence day πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ Happy 4th!

This is the first vision and purest form of 'independent' for me. Everyone has a child within us and I imagine her to be like this. CareFree. Independent. Happy.

@Lee-White its imaginary, 'living on the edge' kind of moment.

This is my, "Independence," submission. The flag of course is a symbol for sovereignty and independence. This happens to depict a scene from my local park where the flag guards a bench that is dedicated to the memory of a local military service member. Painted using the Procreate app.0_1500318999011_IMG_0901.JPG

@smithdraws Hi Joshua, This looks to me like an altered photo using a filter or painted on top of a photo. I would use this photo as a guide and create an image based on it. Using this as reference can solve many problems that a photograph like this has. Some of those things are shadows going too dark, too much contrast, strange things in the image like the path on the right, etc.

I do not really have time to do a color illustration....but the prompt inspired this image and I could not resist putting it on paper...so just a quick inking piece.
In case zoology is a long way in the past, the hermit crab finds and inhabits shells from other animals and often carries a sea anemone around in what is supposed to be a mutually beneficial relationship....
