The darker nights are drawing closer in the UK I find I can not see well enough to paint traditionally the colours are all wrong the next day can anyone share their way of coping with this or is a daylight lamp the best way to go.

If you're looking for something cheap I DEFINITELY recommend this.

For me it's the best lamp whenever I'm working on small 8.5x11 pieces and it's just easy to move around and can move, bend, and turn in any direction if you attach it to a desk or something!

It's not so much the lamp but the bulb. You will want a bulb in the 5000-6500k range. That's the range that simulates daylight which is how colors should be viewed.

Since we are on the subject, anyone have any recommendations for a long bulb desk lamp?

They are expensive, but work well with my tired eyes and SAD - Verilux lamps.
