Your Dream Portfolio!
-
I did have J.C. Leyendecker in my list but I took him out in favor of some of the vintage mystery books...I do like your list though, @MissMarck .
These are the 20 images I've come up with myself. It seems like I like the highly rendered images and simple textured ones.

I'm trying to decide which one to do the master study of. Maybe the Julie Dillon one or Justin Gerard one... -
Here's where I am with the dream portfolio, although it still needs a lot of editing. I feel like I'm probably missing a lot, too, so I'll keep looking. What surprised me is how cartoony most everything I chose is, and how much line/watercolor. I'm not sure the medium is what grabs me the most, though. Maybe it's the feel - fun, colorful, whimsical. It's not clear to me at this point. But anyway, here's the board: https://www.pinterest.com/Kathysdotcom/dream-portfolio/

@Lee-White for the master copies: Do you recommend that we trace them or do a side-by-side copy?
Reason I ask: I was watching an interview with Chris Mould the other day who was advocating the process of tracing artists you enjoy to literally feel their line work. It was an interesting idea because I hadn't really considered it before. When you say "master copy" I was assuming the side-by-side but I can see value in both methods now that I think about it.
-
@mcucchi I typically recommend drawing it from scratch, but these are just guidelines. You can try the tracing method and see if it gives you something that the from scratch method didn't.
-
@mallette Yay for Nancy Drew!!! I was just thinking I wanted to swap one of my dream portfolio pieces for one of the interior illustrations from Nancy Drew! I copied those all the time when I was little!
-
@mcucchi I had an art teacher in middle school who had me trace the Sailor Moon/anime characters I liked at the time to get a good feel for how they were drawn. Let me know if either way works for you. Tracing or not

This is my Dream Portfolio, Thoughts? https://www.pinterest.com/jayjabberwokkie/dream-portfolio/
I found the journey of doing the dream portfolio was a bigger reward than even studying the pieces I picked. The artist's I found I relate with. I found commonality in things I already do and kinda had a home coming on what influences me. I even went back to things I loved as a child, the stuff that captivated and inspired me to start, and found that some but not all still remain influential. Over all this was an amazing eye opening experience! Thank you.

I find my self more interested in the use of complex color but also the use of minimal strokes to represent the subject. https://www.pinterest.ca/richcartwright3/dream-portfolio/

This is great idea and having looked at other folks dream folios it's introduced me to some great artists I'd not heard of. Downside is I now have to review my 20 as there are some new pieces I want to add.

So much fun making a dream portfolio. I am looking at them now and trying to figure out what I love about each one. There definitely seems to be a marine theme, magical and whimsical style. Also something with lighting, glowing etc. A fun surprise to find out that one of my favorite pieces is from @Lee-White!
A little intimidated by what I have selected since I am a new artist and not really sure how to begin:0 https://www.pinterest.com/pmart99/dream-portfolio-for-svs/

@mallette - Love those vintage book covers!
-
@jazeps-tenis - some great 'Golden Age' pieces. I loved Gustaf Tenggren!
-
@andyg - Some really cool illustrators that I hadn't seen before.
-
@missmarck - Love all the vintage style fashion in your choices!
-
@pamm I definitely love the vintage style! I'm excited to integrate it into my work!
I tried to click on your Pinterest board, but it didn't work. Maybe your board is set to private?
-
@missmarck - Yep...set to private:0 I'll fix it. Thanks.

@lee-white Hi Lee
How many master copies should we do? All 20 or just the top 5 for example.
-
This is my collection, but I'm having trouble finding a good connection between them all (it was also ridiculously hard to narrow it down to just 20, lol) : https://www.pinterest.com/plybondesign/dream-portfolio/
