Ready to make changes!

Hi everyone,
I have been looking to 'up' my children's illustration output for a while. I joined SCBWI last year and then a few months ago SVS. I have only recently started to think that this could be a viable career option, at 34. I sent my first batch of postcards out at the start of the year, entered some competitions, heard diddly squat back from anybody and then felt pretty crappy about it all for a while.
I know there are a lot more setbacks in my future but I really am in for the long haul on this one. I am so glad that I finally discovered that SVS has an active forum for illustrators! I have a feeling it will be a real morale boost!Happy be be starting this journey with so many great artists!

Welcome to the forums. The best attitude to have is to be willing to make any changes you have to in order to be where you want to be. When I started at SVS I adopted the attitude that I knew nothing about drawing or painting, and every single aspect of my art needed to change. I was convinced that where I was skilled was in watercolor and inking, and swore to never touch any digital medium. The first year was me blowing painting after painting and almost quit numerous times, and then I decided to blow up the whole building sorta speak, and started drawing digitally. I still sucked, but I realized that I had a ton of issues I had never addressed. I was horrible with color, perspective, designing and rendering. I still feel completly unskilled, but have noticed vast improvement.
Hope the best for you, and use these forums as much as possible.
