I'm not sure if it is standard to introduce yourself on the forum, but I'll give it a go :)!
I'm Nadya, 32 years old, married and I'm mommy to almost 4 year old Luke and I work as a freelance illustrator in my art studio in The Netherlands (I'm Dutch). I've been wanting to improve my skills more actively for quite some time. I quit my day job in 2015 (before that I had built up my working days as an illustrator gradually until I was able to quit). My work mostly consists out of illustrations that I sell within the private sector (so on Etsy for example) and commissions (also within the private sector mostly). I create paintings, art prints, calendars (and currently a picture book) for example. What I have noticed is that I don't spend a lot of deliberate time improving my skills. I'm running into my own boundaries and see a lot of flaws. On the one end I'm able to make a living, but I'm not content with the quality I'm putting out there. I love creating whimsical illustrations of animals / children in endearing scenes that evoke some kind of emotion within the viewer and that is what I try to build my brand around. As a self taught artist I keep running into a lack of fundamentals (while I don't wish to enroll in art school right now, since I like to carve out my own path). I feel like I have taught myself how to somewhat play an instrument, but I can't read any notes. I hope you understand what I mean. Therefore it has proven a little hard for me to create a learning plan for myself (okay, each year there is some improvement when I compare my work to the last year, but I'm talking about greater and more deliberate change than that).

Fundamentals that I would like to tackle are shadow and light, value and color, composition and perspective. I hope to create a learning schedule with the help of SVS's learning courses. If anyone has some tips about how to get started (and which course for example would be a good begin), I would be very happy!

I learned about SVS by listening to the 3 Point Perspective podcast and Jake Parker's video's. His last video (and the second podcast) being the turning point to try out SVS and switch from Schoolism.

My current work can be found at www.nadyart.nl. I hope to share some of my progress during these courses and exercises on www.instagram.com/nadyart. And I hope to learn a lot in the forums as well. What I have seen up until now has been very inspiring! Sorry for the long post by the way ๐Ÿ™‚

@nadyart Welcome to the forum. You work is amazing!

Will's Creative Composition and Jake's How to draw everything are great to start with. One is more theoretical the other is more hands-on
I totally get what you mean about the fundamentals. I am self-taught too and always going back to the basics to try to establish it better. In addition to SVS you can check out the fundamental videos at Ctrl+Paint too.

Let us know how you proceed.
