A Science-Fantasy Christmas Story (For Grown-Up Readers)

Just for fun: a story.

Besides wanting to up the ante on my illustration skills, I am always looking to improve my writing. (Hoping to become a writer/illustrator.) One of the things I hope to learn from SVS is how to morph this skill / interest into writing for children, which I understand is its own art. I have yet to take the class on writing picture books, but it’s high on my list of priorities.

At any rate, last year I wrote a science-fantasy short story in homage to a collection of festive short stories called “Christmas on Ganymede” that I bought when I was 11 years old and that - STONE-COLD DORK ALERT! - I've read every Christmas season since.

This story is about the Wise Man Caspar, it’s about Santa Claus, it’s about loneliness, and it’s about purpose.

It mostly takes place in the improbable future, though some of it takes place in the distant past.

There are no illustrations with it, though I hope it may spark some ideas.

Of course, it does suffer from the problem all works of writing share that illustration does not: it takes time to absorb the imagery. (Writing being, after all, a collection of purely abstract symbols organized into phonetics and meaning that require every reader's active interpretation...)

I hope no one finds the concepts in the story offensive - there’s nothing lewd here. Please take the story in the spirit of playfulness in which it was intended.
