This was the start of this illustration. My beginning sketch.
Then fast forward to some color studies. At this stage, I realized that I wasn't really feeling the position of this Raven. So I went back to the drawing board.
   
Then I discovered the dune grass brush.
Lastly, I added some light and texture, and finally completed this Raven # 3

@Jennyann What program did you use? I like the brushwork.

@chrisaakins Hi Chris, I used photoshop. I discovered a brush called the dune brush and fell in love with the texture. It looks like it's for grass, but I used it throughout, by making it smaller. I want to try making a brush preset of it to make multiple shapes later as well.

I'm still learning too. Mostly through trial and error, and looking up how to do things on youtube. -

Maybe it is just me. I find the original posture of the raven tells a clearer story in this image. The raven is intimidating, and scary. But in the newer sketch, the raven is quite passive.
I also like it better in the color studies, the raven is a cleary black shape against a light background. It got lost a bit in the final paintings.
Hope this makes sense. I would love to hear what others think. -
@xin-li Yeah, it makes sense. I hadn't really thought of the emotional impact, but it's good to hear going forward. My main focus was mostly on the Raven, that's where most of that decision fell upon after observing Ravens and seeing how they move in the real world. I noticed that the first posture wasn't something they did in real life. So, I pulled back. It's probably a matter of finding that middle ground between reality and exaggeration. Something I'll focus on in Raven #4. I'll also play with the tilt a little more to experiment. As soon as I figure out how to do that. LOL! Would love to hear from others. Feedback is always helpful.
