Here is the subsurface scattering assignment. I don’t like the shadow much but I got what I wanted from the assignment I think. DD49D83F-AECA-4C7B-A518-0152B84E645B.jpeg

@CSmith25 I didn't get this far in the class and decided to go back and do the magic of colour class. But maybe start off with black and white and then add the colours to ensure your values are good before introducing colour. Like your lime -other than work on the shape more -try to get those veins/segmented sections/sun rays in the interior of your lime in the shadow too. That and the thin side of your lime may be slim also in the shadow. Did you use a reference for the lime?

Thanks for the advice. I do have a problem of getting away from thinking about value as soon as color is introduced. For the shape, I didn’t spend much time on that at all, and it could definitely be better. My main focus was trying to get that subsurface scattered light effect.

This one I focused more on the values. It is the direct light assignment. Not sure I got enough light in there, but I think there is good contrast between the shadows and the lizard. I purposely downplayed the shadows in other areas to try to keep attention to the middle.

@CSmith25 I'd say try not to relax on value and shape so that your work will grow as you go instead of good lighting but people get stuck on shape for example being an eye sore especially when you know you can do better.

@CSmith25 This is far more polished =). Also @Braden-Hallett is still on this class (if you don't believe me his colour/light work pops up everyday it seems on the SVS Virtual Studio March gallery tour lols) -if you tag him he may give some advice (as I have tagged him here).

@Braden-Hallett lols I didn't say you were giving bad advice - I didn't write that man. I said you just took the class and the memories are still fresh and maybe you could advise him in his homework better than me since I didn't get through much of it. You funny -I'd never say anything bad about you. I do agree about the tag when I was writing it out.

Correct! I indeed said the thing, lol. I just have a self-deprecating sense of humour 🙂

I was having trouble getting things how I wanted them in color so I went through the 10 steps to digital painting class before I did this one. It is the soft lighting assignment. I was much happier with it and I felt like with the 10 steps I was consistently moving forward instead of going back and fixing things constantly, which was nice.
