sorry...
-
Hey, better to know now right lol?
-
@DanetteDraws Her grin looks like she doesn't mind hehe
@carlenevick Yes! Definitely better to know now! Don't feel a bit bad, us adults enjoyed it lol
-
Not gonna lie, feeling pretty embarrassed that everyone got a chuckle lol... perhaps I need to work on my skills before sharing again. Thanks for all your input though.
-
Don't get me wrong, I also felt the fear you tried to convey of him being on the broom. But too many things added up to that other depiction. " Is that a broomstick in your pants or are you just happy to see me? "

@carlenevick - Please don't stop sharing your work - we are here to learn from one another - I don't know anyone on this forum but I consider you all my friends - So I hope folks don't mind my saying there was a slight lapse of decorum with the replies - I think Bobby was very careful in how he worded the subject when he first brought it up so as to not cause embarrassment - it is hard because we do not really know each other but we are here for criticism - I think giving an honest and hard critique and saying things you are unsure of is taking a risk and I think we are here because we are willing to take those risks and we are willing to take the criticism too - but I know I don't want to discourage someone or cause embarrassment - so please keep on posting!
-
I love the colors and the candy corn and peppermints around them. I really like the way you rendered Santa Claus. Maybe one of them could be riding side saddle
-
I love this idea - so creative! Please don't feel bad - I think we've all had this happen (I know I have and I draw almost exclusively animals!). I've also had people tell me that an elk I drew with closed eyes looked "like a zombie" and many other funny things...It doesn't have anything to do with your skills - it has to do with the fact that it's hard to adjust our perception to separate what we've drawn and the intention in our heads as artists. That's why we have to use little tricks to help us see our mistakes, like holding our drawing up to a mirror, taking a picture of it with our cell phone or looking at it upside down. Only then can we start to see what's "just not right." When fellow artists get a chuckle at a foible, it's done with the greatest fellowship since we've seriously all been there. This one will just take a little tweak. I hope you'll keep posting - you've got good ideas!
-
Thanks again guys. I really do appreciate the constructive criticism that was shared with me - I want to improve so much and I know there's no shortcuts, so it's invaluable!
And I appreciate the solidarity very much - I know nothing was meant, I think it can be easy to forget that someone early in their journey nervously posted a piece of work that they probably cared a lot about lol. No harm done though - glad to be among friends and fantastic artists willing to share opinions so freely.

@carlenevick I apologize if I contributed to your embarrassment - please don't take it to heart, we all make mistakes and it could've (and has been!) any one of us who has made that same mistake before. That's exactly why we show our work to others - since we're so close to our own work, we don't pick up on things that others will. No matter whether you're a beginner or a pro, it happens to all!
Re: the comment about lack of decorum, I can see that on one hand, but on another I can honestly say that looking back through the comments, it's clear that nothing was mean-spirited about the remarks. Honestly, it's a tough industry to be in and if an artist can't have a sense of humour about themselves and their work, the really awful criticisms you'll get (and you WILL get them, I'm also a graphic designer by day and I've endured some pretty harsh critiques, and also have had to defend my work to the death when I disagree) will cut right through you and will make you want to quit. I hope it's clear that no one was making fun of you or your work @carlenevick, keep at it! You're off to a great start and have a very adorable concept (I love the candy corns btw!). I'm looking forward to seeing your next iteration
One thing to note for your revised version too: you have a great composition happening, but I would say to watch the tangents on the left and top edges - give the broom and bag/Santa's hat more breathing space from the edges. Also, try a different brush (like a more "natural" looking one) and avoid the airbrush, it'll make your work look less digital and give it a more painterly, enduring quality.

Carlene, I gave your piece another pass after Danette's input, and using some of Will Terry's methods for bringing out the color with a color dodge layer, I came up with this...
I also used the pattern brush to add more candy corn, and increased the top to give Santa's hat more room. But this is 99% YOUR work. All I did was make a grey scale layer to see the lines and tones more clearly, this made the final less dark. Then over that I used a copy of your original set to overlay at 50% to bring the color back. Over that is another overlay layer with flat color at 20% opacity to make things brighter... and then finally Will's color dodge layer to resaturate the whole piece. Hope this can help you...
If you pm your email, I can send you the PSD file.

Great feedback guys, I just learned so much in two minutes!
Bobby - I'm going to try recreating those steps you just mentioned, see how much I can take away from them and apply to my next project.
I did decide to restart the 3rd thursday prompt, figured it would be a great chance to explore some other ideas I had, but I will keep playing with this concept to push myself further.
I'll be sure to share the newer WIP too - thanks guys.

I will take screenshots of the layers and post them for you.
