How would you describe my illustration style?
-
Hi everyone, I've got a bit writing to do here to describe my illustration style. It is often not that hard for me to delineate styles of others, but when it comes to my own work, I just can't put words together ... So dear fellow illustrators, I wonder if I can get some of your help here.
I use traditional media most of the time, and I've pasted a snapshot of my portfolio below for your reference.
Thank you!

Ok I'm still relatively new at this, but I love your work. To me there are several things that go into a style - Character Design, Color Palette, Story, Drawing skills and linework, perspective, the amount of whimsey, consistency amoung your work. There are probably even more, but to me you have balanced and handled all of these things beautifuly. I can't describe your style in a few words. Maybe someone else will be able to do that. But to me it's very nice in every respect!

Thank you @deborah-Haagenson ! and for your encouragement
You've delineate it really well, wonder why I never thought of that. Character, Palette, Story, Drawing skills, etc. Your summary is giving me a very good start point to think of how to describe an art style. Thanks again

You have some great portfolio pieces here and you definitely have a consistent style! It's often harder to figure out/describe your own style since it's often just the way you naturally draw so you don't analyze it.
Describing your style just comes down to how you make the art. I can see you use thin linework and a soft colour palette. There are a lot of cool tones overall which creates a calm feeling, and pops of warmer colours to make main characters or elements stand out. You said you use mainly traditional media, so you can talk more about what specific media you use. I see lots of beautiful textures (watercolour?) especially in the backgrounds. Overall, I would say it's soft and whimsical

I honestly don't really know how to describe people's styles, but I'll throw out some things that I see about your work. Some keywords: Soft, sweet, playful. While some of your pieces look traditional, and some look like they could have been done digitally, overall your work looks mixed media, with watery washes. Your color palette is soft and calming with some bright and bold accents. I do feel like there's some Japanese children's illustration influence in there- or at least what I personally identify with Japanese children's illustration. Your color palette and character design choices remind me of some books I have or have seen by Japanese illustrators.
I really love your portfolio! I can really get into the little worlds and situations you've crafted and your rendering and textures are so pleasing.

@idid I also thought of soft, whimsical and poetic
-
I would describe it as a soft, whimsical style. The backgrounds have a painterly texture the looks like watercolor, and the characters are very lively and playful.
You have a really lovely style
-
@idid your artworks are so beautiful. Very pro looking. It seems like you've honed your style. I would describe you style as loose, playful, and colorful. i'm not that good in describing style tho.
-
Beautiful portfolio @idid!
Hereโs what comes to mind: playful, dreamlike, picture books, watercolor mixed media, school art, magical atmosphere, modern, adventure, flat but textured, pastel, bedtime.
I can definitely see your style in picture books and believe youโre well on your way!
-
@idid I'd say the following: light touch with watercolour and how you use white space, more pastel colours with highlight of saturated ones, and mostly soft lighting. Hope that helps.
-
Like a pitch dark nightmare from the bowels of a beast so foul its breath sours milk, its gaze wilts flowers and its roar soils pants!!!...
That is to say, charming, and quite lively. I enjoy that your color pallet isn't overly saturated making it feel more grounded. There is good energy as well in some of these too, you can feel the motion.
-
I would describe it as unfairly perfect. Does that help??
-
@idid Nice! Fun. Expressive. Alive.
I love it!
Everything is moving.
I think children would love it. -
omg I LOVE describing artwork. Here we go:
"Whimsical and dynamic with a delicate color application that creates lush and charming environments. Idid's (sic?) illustrations are full of loveable characters inhabiting believable worlds, solving problems, having fun and making the reader laugh!"
Use it! Good luck. Your stuff looks great.

Thank you for pointing it out. @Melanie-Ortins I never noticed I used a lot of cool tones! But you are absolutely correct here. Maybe I need to try more warmer background too
and Thanks @TessaW I am indeed influenced by Japanese painting, particularly Ukiyo-e. I think lots of Japanese Kidlit artists are influenced by Ukiyo-e too, that may explain why. You definitely got very sharp eyes.
@Emma-T I really appreciate your summary, it looks wonderful! You must be a good writer
Also thank you @Julia @StudioHannah @Nyrryl-Cadiz @Jeremy-Ross @Heather-Boyd @AnthonyWheeler @jsnzart and @Blitz55 for suggesting the keywords -- soft, whimsical, playful character, etc. I think your keywords/summary also points out a direction for me to concentrate in future illustrations, so that I can keep what I like in my current style and also make these traits more recognizable. Thank you again !

@idid haha You definitely use some warmer tones too so I don't think it's lacking! I also tend to prefer cooler colours so I just noticed the overall trend. If anything I think it makes all the pieces in your portfolio look very cohesive
