Our featured student for the month of September is Janette Hill. It's up on our blog and below is an introduction to the Q&A that our friend Katy conducted with Janette:

In this era of pressure, doubts and competition, stories like the one shared here by Janette Hill can be like a buoy of reassurance in the unsympathetic sea. If the voices around you are singing, “You’re not good enough!” and you’re wondering if you should join the choir, take a moment to read about Janette’s triumph over those voices and be refreshed by this brilliant, hilarious and down-to-earth memoir.

      This quote is gold.

@Janette -- great interview! Love the humor and how you generously shared your experience with us!

And for what it's worth, the whimsical just-flows-out-of-you style is my personal favorite of all your various styles. 😊❤️

@Melissa-Bailey-0 Thank you so much for saying that. 🙂 I struggle os much with trying to focus on one style. I think I just have to embrace it all! 🙂

@Janette YES! As someone who works in more than one style too, I agree that we should just embrace what comes out of us naturally. While working in one style is the recommended route, there are working illustrators who work in more than one style, so there is a precedent.* 😉

*See Vashti Harrison, Bruce Whatley, David Wiesner, Kyle Webster (yes, of Photoshop brush fame), and SVS's own Jake Parker. They all rock multiple different styles. And check out this great blog post by art director and illustrator Guiseppe Castellano. Hope this helps build your confidence in rocking your own multiple styles!
