I’m new around here & I’m looking for some friends to work & learn with!

Heya everyone, the name’s Amanda but you can call me Tora! I’m a non-binary artist and I use They/them pronouns. I’ve only been on svs for a few days and just joined the forum about a day or two ago, so I’m still a complete newbie. I’ve been drawing for about nine years and was pretty much self taught until now. I’m what you would call a “furry” artist, meaning that my specialty is drawing anthropomorphic/ human-like animals! (much like the characters in the Disney movie, Zootopia) Down below, I attached a couple artworks that I’ve made a few weeks ago.
I just turned 18 about three weeks ago and I’m looking for some friends out here on the forum that are around the same age and share similar interests as me! My interests would be music, cosplay, anime, gaming, and of course art! My dream goal is to work for a company like Studio Ghibli in Japan when I’m older, but a goal that I have for the immediate future is to build up my portfolio and become a freelance artist to start getting some work experience under my belt!
I’m very excited to learn with the svs program and meet you all in the very near future! -
Hello Tora and welcome to SVSLearn Forums. I haven’t been a teen for a long time, but use to hang in the same social circles <insert Steve Buscemi skater meme>.
You’ve likely already started doing your research about animation courses and how the Japanese industry is like, but I would like to drop a few helpful links:
YouTube: Animator Dormitory Channel Here you’ll receive a working Japanese Animator’s honest discussion about pay and work conditions.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsLPWmJXcELI3QTuqzNqkVQ/videosNHK World – 10 Years with Hayao Miyazaki A documentary that follows Miyazaki as his studio was creating Ponyo. He's is retired now, but the workplace culture he fostered must still be present.
https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/ondemand/program/video/10yearshayaomiyazaki/?type=tvEpisode&YouTube: Software used in the Anime Industry
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DSnKa--aMMYou may want to do research on the studios that are working on the latest animation series on Netflix, Hulu, etc. It may be easier to break into those places first. Also, Ghibli recently released their first fully CGI movie. Perhaps they need more 3D animators?
Lastly, LightBox Expo, an event for those who want to get into the animation and video game industries, is happening now, running to Sunday. Check it out. Some videos are being recorded and living on YouTube or Discord, free to watch.
Best of luck to your career. がんばって!
BTW, have you read or watched Beastars ? It’s Zootopia for an older audience.
