Hey all! I have recently been seriously considering finding a mentor. I am struggling with my career progress and feel like perhaps walking alongside an industry professional is what I need. Does anyone have any mentor program recommendations for illustrators? Specifically kidlit, book covers, or graphic novels?

I have found an opportunity through SCBWI, but I feel like the competition for that will be so fierce that I won't have a chance. Would love to know what opportunities you all have come across out there on the interwebs. I know motivarti used to be a thing, but it shut down years ago and I'm sort of at a loss.

@Kasey-Snow The Illustration Department offers mentorships, but they can be expensive. I'm still considering it but I'm looking around to see if others offer that service.

@Laurel-Aylesworth-0 I did the 3month mentorship with The Illustration Department and highly recommend it. I thought it was well worth the price.

@Kasey-Snow I found a website called mentorme.art and they offer illustration mentorships. There's a handful of kidlit artists specifically on there. Prices for the mentorship vary from person to person. I haven't tried it, but it seems like it would be worth the cost. I really want to try booking a session; just don't know if I have the funds to do it right now. I would look into mentorme or The Illustration Department 🙂

Thanks for the feedback! I really appreciate it. I'd heard of The Illustration Department, but didn't know they offered mentorships. Never heard of Mentor Me at all though, I'll have to look into both!

I'll keep an eye on this thread to see if any other future suggestions pop up, so if anyone finds something, please do share!

I haven't tried this personally but another option you can try is to find an artist on social media that you like and think has good communication skills. Contact them and ask them if they are interested in mentoring you (paid). In my experience most artists if they have time are open to new income streams. However, if you go this route I think you need to be very clear about what you are hoping to get out of the mentoring.

Good luck, sounds like there are a lot of good options out there.

I don't have any answers, just wanted to say this is such a good question. I need a mentor too, but also had no idea where to start! Thanks for sharing 🙂
