Character Design Help

Some of you may have seen my last post about self-publishing, well the story my son wrote is in the hands of an old friend who is now a High School English/Speech teacher and will make sure its all good. The next step for me is to create the main character (loosely based on my son). I wanted to do some basic turn posses to get a feel for the character. Before I move into some action posses am I on the right track? Just got done watching Illustrating a childrens book where Jake turns a character with ease. Wish it was that easy LOL

looking good so far!! i would watch the proportions though, rule of thumb is elbows are at the waist and hands touch mid thigh. your arms are looking a bit short

I think your face shots are really great and show consistency. I also see consistency in your body shots...it's easy to tell this is the same character, etc. The one thing I noticed (and this is very hard for me) is that the age of the character looks different from the face shots to the body shots. He looks older to me in the body shots, more of a teenager (his hair is a little longer?). Maybe your son is a teenager, and if so, well done! You seem like you're on the right track to me. Good luck with your project! I'm sure this is something that will mean a lot to your son.

updated sketch... i may start on some action poses now. I want to nail some different movements and emotions with this character before I move on to the dog that will also be in the story .

These look good, the character definitely looks consistent! I see you are trying an "asset swap" approach for expressions. This will make it look very stylized (Saturday morning cartoons typically do this). If this is the look you want, that can work well. If not, maybe it is worth paying attention to the perspective of the face and adjusting eyes and mouth accordingly, as well as changing the shape of the face depending on the emotion.

@smceccarelli I see what you mean with the perspective of the face. I need to squash and stretch it more on some of the expressions. I am not sure how many of these expressions will be used in the book, I wanted to get familiar drawing the same character before starting on the actual drawings.
