      Hello,

I’m a first generation Canadian born to Italian immigrants. My family celebrates epiphany, and Befana is our Santa.

I’m in university, and this weeks children’s book writing assignment is to take a folk story, a fairy tale, or a cultural story and reimagine it.

Growing up first generation Canadian, I was immersed in Italian culture, but without anyone else who was Italian, or celebrated as we did. I was the weird kid at school that brought eggplant parm for lunch, and the family that whipped out a full casserole dish of piping hot lasagne at the beach with 95 of my loud hairy family members.

So what I’m trying to gather, and google isn’t exactly helping me out, is other Italian experiences with Befana in your childhood, or how you celebrate epiphany.

This is my rough sketch of who my version of Befana would be. I like that she’s softer and kinder than most of the stories I’ve heard of her. C8C9F97F-B243-4367-A14B-3477B861C006.jpeg
