Critique for portfolio piece
-
I’ve got a portfolio review on October first and I’m trying to make 12 new pieces for it. Here’s the first one I’ve finished. Let me know what alterations it might need to really make this portfolio worthy. I was concerned about the sort of monochrome color palette with blue all over so I’m curious if it feels like it’s working.

@Griffin I think this is great! I like the colors and the composition. I also like the characters, especially the the one pulling his hoodie tight, too funny!
however I’m not sure there is a clear story, perhaps you could turn this into a sequence? I’d love to get a closer look at your characters and learn more about this monster and why they are hiding. Hope that was helpful, and really nice work!

@Asyas_illos I was actually thinking of having a few other portfolio pieces with these characters since it’s good to show sequential pieces. I think it’s okay that there isn’t a perfectly clear story here. I don’t think every illustration needs to show an open and shut story or maybe it should in the case of a portfolio piece? My thinking is that if I open up a picture book to any given page the illustration I find isn’t going to have an entire story in it and I want my portfolio pieces to feel like they fit somewhere in a larger story and that they don’t just exist in a vacuum if that makes sense

Hey Griffin, I really like that color scheme. A couple things I would do to make the composition stronger would be to vary the size of some of the rock bunches. And while I don't know the context of the story here, shouldn't the two people be a bit more afraid? Maybe they could be hugging each other or one could be covering the other one's mouth while making the finger-over-mouth "Shh" sign.
You might consider changing the angles at which the rocks are stationed, they all seem to be fairly parallel.
Looks super cool as is though and I'm sure you would get work from this! Those shadows are super effective! Here's a quick presto chango I did in PS

@Griffin I totally get that and I agree. I guess I was thinking in critique arena mode where the guys always want story, but I definitely agree with you on that. That being said I’d still like to know more, I’d be interested in reading more if this was a page in a book I flipped too.
