This was so fun to make. Learning the bean/flour sack technique was really helpful when trying to simplify a pose. Highly recommend this class.

I made another one. What do you guys think? Should I make an illustration with a background for this one?

@kayleenartlover This is such a great assignment, it's really fun to see how you've combined human poses and animal characters!

One bit of feedback on your elephant: the kicking leg seems really important to the action, but it is hidden within the silhouette. Could you try rotating the character so we can see the leg sticking out more? Or kicking with the other leg, or in the other direction?

I love your happy bear carrying that HUGE fish! The bear looks so proud and satisfied. That's one that I would love to see a scene for! I'm wondering where that huge fish came from (or a tiny bear? haha).

@Rebecca-Jensen Oh wow! Thanks for the critique! I agree about the elephant. And the bear I tried to make a cub with a giant Alaskan salmon. I’ll work on a background for it. 👍🏻

I’m feeling good about turning the bear into a full illustration, however, even thought the background is still rough, I can’t figure out what I need to fix to make the colors work and have it all look cohesive. Any tips?

@kayleenartlover where you put the work in is showing for sure. Love the little bear with the big fish!

But right now your problem getting it all to mesh together may be the environment and staging. The art style for the background is so different from the bears that it seems like two different illustrations. And then with the staging, the composition and the addition of the small bear on the left leave the focal point being a bit confusing. I keep looking at the small bear instead of where the payoff should be on the bear carrying the big fish.

I would do some composition and layout studies in the same way you did for the character and it should be working just fine in no time. : )

Alright so there’s 2 kinds of blue I’m debating between, unless there’s a different color that would fit better…

@kayleenartlover I have not studied color much yet, but I like the top blues better.

I just took this class too, and it was so helpful! I would love to see a full illustration of the elephant character. He's so cute! One thing that might help his silhouette is to try exaggerating the foot that's coming towards us? Maybe play around with making it bigger and see if that helps? Or a combination of making the foot a little bigger and turning him slightly?
