@Kim-Rosenlof thanks, I’m not sure I will enter it though, not enough story I think. But, I like to just pump out whatever ideas come to mind until i find “the one”.

@Asyas_illos I get that, sometimes I just draw something to get started and then do another piece with a better story. I am not sure what story you were going for with the yellowish ovals, but you could make them generic fish and one of them be a unique fish that she is looking at that’s different than the others, and that glows a little brighter.

it was supposed to be like the saying a moth to the flame, like they’re all gathering around her cuz she’s glowing but it doesn’t explain why she’s glowing…

@Asyas_illos Maybe she's like an Angler Fish and she's drawing them in to eat them! Sounds like a creepy fish Halloween story LOL!

@Asyas_illos Oh, okay. That makes sense. I think once the fish are in it will make more sense especially if they are darker than the mermaid like they are drawn to the light. Maybe one could be reaching out to the mermaid with their fin like they are curious what is going on and wanting to touch the shiny object 😂 . I don't know if you really need to explain why the mermaid is glowing or not.
Even if you don't use it for this month's prompt, I still think it is a great piece. I love your style and the colors are really great.

I love how simply you convey great stories and textures... I totally get it about drawing ideas out and seeing how they come to life or not. I do the same thing! Sometimes a thumbnail is so much better and in my mind it's different than the final render.

@Asyas_illos I really like this so far. I think grid like pattern we can see in the dirt on the lower left does look a bit odd though. I think it would be less distracting if it just looks like the rest of the dirt. Aside from that I really love the textures you have in the dirt. I’m always trying to fill my pieces with more texture. How did you achieve yours?

@Griffin-McPherson you’re right I’ll be going back to try and remedy that as for the texture, I’ve been really trying to branch out and get creative with textures myself. The way I do the dirt is I use a million different brushes (3 or 4) each brush gets a different color but I won’t vary it to far from the base color. I used a gouache brush for the base then when over it with a rough marker and I used a crummy roller and broken crayon. And on top of that a dotty flaky one for the flecks of dirt. And of course my trusty rake!

@Asyas_illos lDo you set a separate layer for each color/brush for the textures? I'm trying to learn this as well. And to keep the piece looking unified and while applying minimal brush strokes. Found some cool brush packs from Retro Supply Co. however not finding crayon yet! Where did you find your brushes?

@ArtistErin yes I do keep them separate and use clipping masks then when I achieve a look that I like I’ll condense them down to one layer. But I’ll keep the different elements of the entire image separate. Like the ground is one layer, the light is another etc. I’ll see if I can find the names of the packs I’ve bought.
