I have too many styles- how can I choose just one? Are my edges a mess? And how can I land a studio job? Jake Parker, Lee White, and Will Terry give their takes in this episode.

When I heard there was a Sergio from my country 🇨🇷 who submitted not just a question but a portfolio to you I went to your Youtube channel (I usually listen to the audio only version) to see if there was on-screen sharing but alas, none was to be found. Us arts folk in this tiny piece of land are a rather small crowd and I know some artists named Sergio that left me wondering if I happened to know or have heard about the guy.

While the freelancing vs. studio job differences were rather well explained, something that was missing in my perception was the fact that while freelancing gives more freedom for jobs and time, it also comes with not living with the certainty of a monthly paycheck which may spell trouble for disorganized types, and deal with the not so great parts of running a business, including accounting, taxes, lousy unpaying clients and whatnot — which may be too much to bear for someone only wishing to focus on the craft part of the profession. In any case, it is always advisable for someone out of college to get some work experience as an employee somewhere first, as there are valuable life lessons to be learned that way. Then, after some experience is finally achieved, the person can have some firmer ground to consider (or not) jumping into the freelancer fray.

@Jake-Parker I was hanging on every word of the part about edges. Edges are something I've been giving more thought to lately, and you guys had some great tips! Thanks again for all the helpful info you share!

I also became curious of Sergio's portfolio. The link to his behance portfolio was made avaliable on the show notes page (scroll all the way down, before the Links section).

@Lee-White omg. I love Whitney as much as the next person, but I have had “The Greatest love” stuck in my head for 3 days now! 😂

Having different styles can work to your advantage if you work in-house, or if you have a solid freelance relationship with one company. I worked for over a decade licensing designs with a greeting card company. I loved it because it gave me the opportunity to try out all different styles. I didn’t have to stick to one style. Great podcast, btw. Varda. Https://www.vardaart.com
