So here is the story. My daughter (14) sketched a few dragons a while back in pencil. She told me she thought it would be really cool if I finished them out for her. Months later I was trying to think of presents I could give her. This dragon came to mind, so I'm trying to finish it up. The design is hers, so I'm not asking help on the design of the dragon. BUT I feel like I could use some help with the rendering side of things. Any tips, suggestions? Thanks! First picture is how the rendering is going so far... watercolor and colored pencil, I am to the Photoshop editing part. Second picture is of her sketch.

Love the colours, the green yellow scales and your daughter's design! Perhaps the line behind the dragon forming the horizon should be a bit softer, like the rest of the background. Beyond that I am unable to help, sorry! Complete Photoshop newbie. 🙂

@Frogpunzel the colours really pop from the background! It's a fun design, and I like the texture from the natural media you've used. It depends what you want to achieve with the rendering. I tend to try and render things in a realistic way, but if that's not what you're after then I think the flatter/textural thing you've got going here works well.

@Frogpunzel what a great idea as gift!! And I also think the colours are wonderful. I agree with @MarcRobinson. Try to imagine what sort of skin the dragon would have and what his horns would be like. Is it scale like, or slimy, or? Then you could add more texture if you wish.

Thank you for your comments @Jean-Watson @MarcRobinson @Chantal-Goetheer I really appreciate it! I have made some small changes to my picture. I like the ideas for texture, and wish I could give it a little less flat of a feeling. Realistic rendering is something I look forward to learning 🙂 Thanks again for the thoughts. I will keep playing with it.
