hi guys. this my attempt at light and shadow for illustrators. do you use custom brushes to get the smooth blending of colour going? for sot and firm edges? i find it quite challenging but fun at same time. i tried to critique from my understanding and typed notes on the image. not sure why i added line work to the round top chest front of the bed. mind blank moment lol
in addition to the above, i also attach list of artist who inspire me to with their style of light, shadow and colour. My favourite graphic stylised being Syd Mead. he worked on films like Aliens, both Blade Runner movies. i love his clean line work on conceptual art. i'd love to even do clean line work like his, even now on simple stuff like drawing squares! lol. on the realistic spectrum, Marco Bucci amazes me with smooth blend of form shadow on local tone per below example on the subject's face. still using enough colour and light to convey the expression and emotion on her face, yet keeping it relevant and near realistic. the 2 in the middle are Anime. Top middle is the Garden of Words by Makoto Shinkai. cannot tell you how many people have tried his style and shared it on YouTube through their videos. how he uses light and shadow to construct natural pristine scenery is magical. he made his own 1st Anime series using an old Mac computer. i'd like to animate my own short story and just be satisfied that i managed to draw something worth sharing with the world. Bottom middle is from an outstanding Anime show - from Akihito Tsukushi comes Made in Abyss. i love it so much i bought the art book from the anime which also includes hundreds of concept stills drawn for one of the TV movies released for the anime series. I also bought a Syd Mead art book to read and study his work. not sure if I'll be able to draw like these guys but i love their art and it drives me. Aaron Blaise has worked for major animation studios in US and shares his work on YouTube now and then. his application of lien work and digital painting blows my mind. he even does 1hour or 2 hour long live art sessions. He's not Bob Ross but Aaron is magnificent.

Thought i'd give it a go at the pencil demo. i don't have a white gel pen and that is now on my next shopping list. any tip on the 2b pencil when setting local tone? i don't know if i pressed a little too hard because my values for core and form shadow are lost in the dark values. i got so flustered i was searching for control-Z on my sketch book!
i dont have a wide array of pencils. just standard cheap pencils from H to 8HB and a mechanical pencil i use for sketching. guessing i should budget just a handful reliable set
