Another newbie joins the ranks.

Hey there everyone! I just joined today--saw the awesome subscription special and, well, what can I say? Can't pass that up! I'm excited to be here and hope to be diving right in to this place soon.
For a little background info on me, I am an illustration hopeful coming from perhaps a somewhat non-traditional direction. I went to school for art education figuring that I could work as an elementary art teacher by day and freelancer by night...let's just say that I was a bit naive about the stresses and job requirements that a teacher has placed on them. After 5 years of trying to make that schedule work, I have resigned from teaching an am taking a one year sabbatical to work on/update my portfolio and try to make an actual go of this. I figure if I fall flat on my face and am totally broke after a year I can always go back to teaching.
I am in the process of moving from Texas to Colorado now to embark upon said illustration journey, but once I get settled in you should be seeing me around more.
In the meantime, it is nice to meet you all!

You are definitely in the right place. Everyone so far on this forum has been constructive. If I were you I'd dive right into some of these classes. Color and light is pretty sweet, so is the perspective class. And if you really want to kickstart this new career--take the time and take the children's book class. It is very good and very extensive. I too used to be a teacher--so it's nice to see another on this forum! Welcome. Oh, and post art here as well. There a a lot of great artists here that are happy to help.

@Reid-Smith Thank you for the welcome! It's nice to see I'm not the only ex teacher around here. As per your suggestion, I did start a sketchbook: http://forum.svslearn.com/topic/413/kasey-s-sketchbook I hope to improve with the help of all the talent around here.

GOGOGO! Here at SVS forum, we'll be your cheerleaders!

@Leontine-Gaasenbeek Thank you! I definitely need both cheerleaders and people to keep me accountable, I am hoping that SVS will provide both.
-
Hehe, we are quite good at both

I agree with what everyone said--I was a bit wary starting out, but everyone here is friendly and helpful. Welcome to the ranks! We're all trying to figure this illustration thing out together.
