@tomshannon You may be being a little too critical--I think you've got a good likeness going. The main thing that stands out is that the characters ears in the first panel are much larger and slightly higher on the face than in the second.

@mattramsey Thank you for the feedback. I do see the "ear" issue and I think making the correction will help my mental block fade some. Very nice. BTW, the fish is completely "off", I haven't come back around to design it...place holder fish at the moment.

higher and bigger ear in the second, plus his face needs to be a just a little chubbier... In the one sleeping with the fish, his head shape is different. Also, when I peek at something when I am sleepy, I only slightly raise my eyelid, I don't know the story but having one eye completely open and the other one shut looks a little strange... love this pencil multi-line work. I am a little jealous? I would take a tutorial from you on how to do this!

@Russ-Van-Dine Thank you Russ for the feedback. I agree. Yeah, the open eye effect is part of the story. Looks odd out of context, that's for sure. I would love to show you how the pencil process works. Once the dust settles with my current project we can chat about it, if you like! Thank you sir.

Are these staying black and white?

@Russ-Van-Dine Nope, color will be added. It wish it was a black and white assignment. The job would be much easier / faster to complete.

@Russ-Van-Dine Hey Russ - looking good! - here is my rundown of my impressions of what seems different from image to image - the shape of the jaw, the size of the head, the location of the ear are the main things for me - the shape of the jaw changes and with it i think his apparent age changes too - i think he is a young adult right? the ear should line up roughly with the brow and bottom of the nose - i think his open eye is too high in the one eye open image - i think for the binocular image i would draw the face without the binoculars and then contract the binoculars in front of the eyes - i did a quick draw over but i thought it was a boy when i did it so it is to very relevant - keeping continuity in a face from pose to pose is very hard - i'll include the draw over in case it is a boy - i basically softened his chin and receded it a bit and tried to make it the same shape and size - hope something in this is useful - i find it very difficult to keep continuity too - i really like your work - look forward to seeing where this goes 🙂

oh - forgot to mention number of fingers changes too( the one where he is holding his nose)

@Kevin-Longueil Hi Kevin, thank you so much for the awesome feedback! This is exactly what I needed. BTW, this is Tom Shannon artwork 😉 Again, I'm so grateful for your feedback and illustration sample. I'm always amazed at how weird it is to "hit the wall" mentally and not "see" the problems to fix. It's so important to have a "sanity" check. Everything you mentioned is SPOT on! Now, I totally see my mistakes. Finally, I feel like I can move forward with the project. I owe you a beer Kevin! ( I assume you're over 21, lol! )

@Kevin-Longueil Oh, and thank you for the nice comments. I like your work as well. I use to live in Portland, many years ago, born there. Nice place. Super arty town.

@tomshannon Totally agree about hitting the wall Tom (not Russ..sorry about that) I feel like i often hit a point where i cannot see things objectively anymore - this forum is so great for pushing past our blind spots - i think sometimes i use a form of shorthand to draw while making an image and grow to accept and ignore some parts of it ..and forget it was shorthand - flipping the image really helps to see this stuff too - glad my critique was helpful though ... always worried folks will be annoyed - thanks for the virtual beer too! cheers

@Kevin-Longueil No worries about annoying me with feedback. At the end of the day, I don't have all the answers and the older I get the more questions I have about what I'm doing and how do do it better. I'm a big believer in "check your ego at the door". Thanks again. Chat more later!
