September 3rd Thursday (fishing)

I really enjoyed the feedback I got last time I posted, so I thought I would do it again. There is my piece for September. I hope the concept is easy to understand. I also wanted to try out a spot illustration. What do you all think, I would love to hear/read some critics.
Thank you in advance. -
I like your colors very much. I think if you laid a bit of the blue over the top of the mermaid she would look more underwater - with her skin tone so pale she looks like she's not in the water. Maybe like the front of the hat for her skin tone. Also, I think the fishing pole and worms should be up in the air at a slight angle to show he's kind of tossed them in surprise that he lost his hat. I really like how the mermaids hair has nice movement - really looks like it's moving in the waves.

Some water over the mermaid to help her recede, but very nice. I feel like his shoe is too small and maybe his hand is too.

Hi @Mandy-Forte! Great idea to dive in here and ask for feedback. Your piece has a nice concept and I love the colour choices. In terms of how to improve it, I had a couple of thoughts...if the mermaid is moving upwards through the composition, to bring the hat back to the man, it would make more sense if her hair was flowing out the other way...because when you move through water, the hair flows out behind you. The other thing, is that if I were a fisherman there's no way I would let my fishing rod and supplies drop overboard, just to get to the hat more quickly...surely the fishing rod is the more valuable possession... So if it were me I'd have the fishing rod perched inside the boat, with the trailing end showing the movement of the boat...and maybe just the pot of worms falling off into the sea.
But this is all personal opinion and there is a lot of lovely work going on, with the design of the mermaid, the textures on the tail and the aqua water..very nice

Thank you all for you comments. I really appreciate it. I always get to a point in my pieces that I know they are not quite finished but I just don't know what to do next, so thank you for your input.
