Hi Lisa, I don't think you need a background for a spot illustration, but you can add very minimal background color behind the character, like a very light tone or whatever color to fit your taste.

Playing with styles. I have made a habit of painting over my paintings 😞

@lmrush I like the painted over style better. Bringing the pink down some and the expression on the face is better. You should put some chocolate on his apron and face. Cause I know my kids can not mix chocolate with out tasting it 🙂

Looks great. Like the chocolate on the face idea. Yeah, not really backgrounds on spots.

I like the chocolate on face and apron idea too. That would add a great little detail to your lovely illustration. I would also add a bit of table or counter under the mixing bowl and in front of William's apron. That would help give definition and eliminate the ragged bottom to the boy. Another thought--you could add a chair behind him. My kids always stood on chairs when they helped me cook. I love the exploration of styles! Can't wait to see more!

You might consider making the mixture a fun color (pink, frosting perhaps?) to avoid a bunch of brown smeared all over the child. Avoiding the feces comparison (and not red to avoid the blood comparison)?

Hi! This is really cute and I like the idea with the chair. 🙂
However, I would go with the chocolate rather than with the punk stuff. It would give a better contrast with his skin tone and would also go very well with the orange shirt and the blue apron.
Maybe you can play with the color slider in photoshop and compare.
                          Bests!
