Does anyone else know about this group? I'm sure submission fees are pretty common but I also know that there are some scams out there.

@mattramsey Communications Arts is a major design & illustration magazine that's been around since 1959: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communication_Arts_(magazine)
(I had a subscription to them for years)

@mattramsey oh also, other significant competitors in the communication arts periodicals would include:

@mattramsey haha no problem, buddy! I apologize; I've been involved in the advertising industry for the past 20 years where CA is quite well known (at least with 190k readers) and took it for granted that others here would be as familiar. I'll try to be more careful in the future of not making that assumption. Regardless, I'm so glad for you to now know of CA and hope it proves to be another great resource for you!
-
@QuietYell Thank you for the heads up on this Scott! - I just entered a single image (the "Friends will guide you to your next opportunity" one) and also a series (my first four wizard of Oz pieces) for the "unpublished" category - i'm sure it is the longest of long shots but it never hurts to try
-
@Kevin-Longueil Awesome! Fingers crossed! ....crossed for the next 2 months! Quite awhile before those accepted get notified!
I agree that it's worth a try! Last year, the "unpublished" category had 8 pieces chosen, so that helps with the "odds of getting in." Plus, your work is not only nicely done, but it has "an edge" to it that the ad world likes. If you haven't seen the winners from last year, they are here:

Here are just the "unpublished" category ones:
http://www.commarts.com/gallery/illustration/unpublished/all/2016If you scroll through, you'll see that James Yang got in CA last year with his eyeballs on sticks piece. The same piece he uses for the cover of his video here on SVSLearn: Portfolios and Self Promotion - In fact... he even mentioned the CA contest in that video... At 27 minutes in he says, "...Another one is CA which is sort of the standard and bible of the industry. A hard one to get into but if you get in there's a lot of great exposure to big people..." (Also, here's James' other SVS video: Editorial Illustration)
So, again, getting in would be so great! Fingers crossed!
-
@Kevin-Longueil Best of luck and keep us posted!
-
@QuietYell Thank you again Scott - i am always in awe of how thorough your posts are - really appreciate the kind words too - after looking at the winners from last year i see that i am further out of my depth than i had imagined
really inspiring though - i'll keep at it and maybe level up before next year!
@Rebecca-Hirsch Thank you Rebecca! Congratulations to you! I just read Tommy dePaola's review of your excellent piece - "This was the happiest image (for me) in all of the entries...." - that is such great feedback!
-
@Kevin-Longueil Thank you!
-
@Kevin-Longueil Oh my goodness! Is this you that made the short list?!!!

@Kevin-Longueil Congratulations, buddy! I am so incredibly happy for you. It is difficult to get into CA, and making it through to the shortlist is in of itself quite an amazing honor. It is a joy to have alerted you to this opportunity and see you get this exciting boost! Go Kevin!
