3rd Thursday Prompt (January)
-
@Eric-Castleman sounds cool! Would be fun to do one !
-
Oh, that would be great. Event if I usually would have no time to submit something, because I only have my spare time for drawing. But watching you guys would already be super helpful. Any ideas already how this would be organized?

I think the issue before was there were to many ideas floating around. If this was something that we wanted to do I would recommend putting someone in charge. We would post the prompt using something like http://artprompts.org/ and then create a thread here were everyone can post their final image. I think what really drove people to complete and compete was the fact that Lee, Will, and Jake might talk about and critique their piece. I would be willing to lead the charge each month on it, and I could also create the slide show of all the images like I used to if there were enough people interested in doing it again.
-
I wrote this prompt for myself, just to make more suitable images for my portfolio:
Kai leaned over to get a better look. βHey I can see my house from here!β he said. Shall we go a bit closer?β
I agree with @Chip-Valecek that the major pull of 3rd Thursday was that our work might get critiqued by Will, Jake or Lee....nevertheless if there were enough people wanting to do a new 3rd Thursday, I'd do my best to support it (or if anyone wants to join in this prompt with me, feel free)...I miss how having a shared project brought us all closer together on the forum.

@Dulcie. I agree
-
@Dulcie I miss it too

honestly I would love to see the prompts come back. I love the idea of getting crits from SVS instructors, but even if it was sharing and getting feedback in the forum it's just another great tool to keep everyone making work and improving. I'd love to participate.

I thought the Third Thursdays were a great element of SVS and the forum. I hope Will, Jake and Lee will consider bringing them back.
As much as I would like to see them re-vamped in one way or other, I believe a self-imposed challenge without a "payoff" of some sort at the end is missing key elements that make an art challenge successful as a motivational tool. This is just my personal feeling and experience, I do not want to discourage anyone!! I just know I would probably not give it priority over the many other things on my to-do list....
Maybe we could ask Will, Lee and Jake to just give a prompt and pick their favorites to highlight every month on the SVS social channels? Even without critique, that may be a stronger motivation to participate... -
@smceccarelli I know what you mean...that without some sort of reward, fulfilling a prompt here on the forum isn't any different from any other challenge we could make up for ourselves.
I agree that it would be great if SVS/ @Lee-White were to issue, say a monthly prompt and reward the best ones with promotion on their social media channels. Following the demise of 3rd Thursday, I've been wondering about whether to participate in other challenges like Animal Alphabets, Colour Collective or Saturday Scribbles on Twitter....they look fun (and of course they'd be useful in terms of self-promotion & connecting with new people), but the prompts are more along the lines of character design, or very very open in the case of Colour Collective...I liked the fact that 3rd Thursday really made you use storytelling skills which is one thing art directors are looking for....if SVS ran a challenge that gave us the chance to showcase that side of our skills, it might help us grow and promote ourselves better, and keep that sense of community going here.

Not even just for practice, but having the prompts was an awesome way to start building portfolio pieces and learning the process of working for a specific assignment in mind. I think that is something a lot of novice illustrators need to help flesh out a portfolio and transition into the industry.
