Dark Fairy Tale Book Illustration
-
Working on a piece for a recent book commission. Am still mostly at the thumbnail stage, just started the paintover, but figured I'd share since it's been a while since I've been around. Missed this place and the community, my life has just been nuts.
Concept is a creepy retelling of classic fairy tales. This one is a vampiric Red Riding Hood. This is my first time working with an author, it's been...interesting. But they approved the thumbnail, so I'm rolling with it, haha. Definitely some stuff that still needs fixing such as Red's arm and the placement of the cape which I'm not happy with. And still messing with lighting, but overall I'm moderately happy with it so far.

Did a little more tonight:
Finishing up the bottom half of the cape and probably playing with lighting a bit...dunno why it's so pink-tinged in this image, but the PS file looks like this:

Thought of this image when I saw your post:
When I searched for it I also found this next one (below). To me, it seems like that illustrator tried to "copy" the first image--or certainly heavily used it as reference. While there is a lot "good" with the "copy", the first one is, to me, light years better. I think it's down to loose paint strokes and mood lighting (so much in the first is obscured in darkness and it actually makes it MORE creepy not being able to see everything in detail).
Just some inspiration for you.

@Kasey-Snow That looks amazing! Can't wait to see more of your work.

Thank you guys for your feedback and inspiration. Here is the finished piece:

This turned out really cool! I like the design of the cape.

@Jake-Parker Thank you Jake. The idea was that the cape would have a liquid/flowing feel to it to remind the viewer of blood, the author liked it, so I will consider it a success.
