jonathon, I hear what you are saying about staying loose for client work and I agree that it's extremely difficult. It's one of the things that almost everyone struggles with. As an instructor, I tell my students that typically their sketches will be the first thing that starts to look good, then the studies and personal paintings will look good. Finally, the professional work will start to match that quality as well.

It's the last thing that matures in someones skill set, so don't worry too much about it. I think you are on that edge and will probably break through this problem sometime very soon. You have a great design sense and it looks like you are getting the technical chops squared away as well. Now just hitting the content and keeping that energy is what you have to focus on. As you get experience under your belt, you will start to see the cool possibilities in even mundane professional job. However, the personal pieces will almost always be better than the pro stuff. Any time there is a client it typically waters down the process a little.

Keep it up! I think you are great and only getting better. : )

@Lee-white , Thanks Lee, That's really good to hear. I'll keep plugging away and working at it. My goal is to have a portfolio ready by next summer that I can start looking for some children's book jobs. You guys are really helping me get there and this forum has helped me focus on what I need to do. So thank's again.

Love the drawings, very creative, and awesome, energetic line work!

@Jonathon-B @Lee-White - The conversation you just had about skill showing first in sketches before showing in commissioned work is SO helpful. I get so impatient with my slow progress, glad to hear there are tiers to growth. I'm catching up on the SVS forums after a couple busy weeks, and I'm so glad I found this thread.

            Thank you!

PS- @Lee-White: I'm currently watching your visual storytelling class - loving the clear instruction and valuable content.

Had a bit of a crazy week and didn't get a chance to do any Inktober stuff, but I think I'm back on track. Here's a little fan art for ya. Finally upgraded my inkbrush and Holy Moley! it's a huge improvement. Using a Pentel (something). It's all in Japanese so I don't know what model it is but I'm really loving it.
