Digital color mixing - limited palette
-
I was reading about limited palettes and have some questions:
-
If I understand correctly, this means you start with three or four hues and only use colors that can be mixed from those hues (and black and white). Does that mean you would always want to choose analogous colors because if, for example, you chose the three primary colors, everything can be mixed from those so you wouldn’t really limit yourself? Or am I misunderstanding this?
-
If you are working digitally, how do you create a limited palette? With a color wheel color picker, you can’t eliminate some of the hues, so do you just have to mentally stay away from the colors not in your palette? (I’m using Procreate on iPad but I’m not asking for specific commands but for the general approach.)
I’m probably just missing the obvious but would appreciate help understanding this.

This is one way to do it HERE
Also you can try bringing your brushes down to low opacity and then use one color over the other, color pick, and then adjust the saturation and brightness in the color wheel. And you can also use a gamut mask look HERE there is a couple posts on it in the Procreate forums. -
I am actually doing a video right on this topic...need a couple of days more to finish it
-
@smceccarelli Yay!

@evilrobot @evilrobot Interesting that they refer to James Gurney in your link because that's actually what I was reading. I will have to study all of this a little more but it's nice to know that other people had the same question and have come up with digital solutions. Thanks for the links.

@smceccarelli where will it be posted?
-
@eric-castleman I´ll post it on my sorely neglected YouTube channel....It´s actually two: one on color terms and color management and one on color palettes and color studies (that´s why it´s taking so long!). They are both (hopefully) very down-to-earth...

@smceccarelli Can you post a link to your channel? I'd love to see your videos

@smceccarelli Yay!!!

got it, thanks!!

@smceccarelli That's really great to hear. I've watched all of your videos on youtube. I can't wait.

I finally managed to finish and post the videos about my approach to color....spent waaaay too much time on them!
However, if interested, here they are: -

@smceccarelli I've just finished watching your first video and it was extremely helpful. I like understanding the theory behind what I'm doing. Also exciting for me was your tip on making a black layer set to the color mode in order to remove the hues from a painting. I use Procreate and anytime I wanted to check my values, I had to export it, and turn it to monochrome in my photo app. Your way is so much simpler. Can't wait to watch the second video.
