Looking for recommendations for video camera (for vlogging and demos)

Hello all,

Just wondering if anyone has any good recommendations for cameras, microphones, editing programs that are highly rated. I’ve found some reviews online but want to hear from people who are actually using the products to vlog and create art demos.

I’ve been asked to begin producing simple technique videos for colored pencil and I’d like to use the tools to also create Facebook videos, Instagram stories and YouTube videos.

logitech hd c920 and OBS video capture software is a great cheap start for either using photoshop or traditional art.

I used to be a video editor and filmmaker, but I haven't kept up with specific tech. All the same, what I would ask first is what do you already have? Is your computer powerful enough for editing? Do you have a phone with a decent video camera? Also where will you be shooting and what's the lighting like there?

I would also strongly emphasize that sound is at least as important as video, but it doesn't have to be that complicated. If you want nice tight and focused sound either look for a lapel mic (though these are prone to picking up rustling of clothes) or my choice would be a shotgun mic mounted on a boom arm, about 12-18 inches away and pointing not at the mouth, but at the top of the chest. This can helps reduce plosives and give a nice resonant sound. Even this may be overkill. Sometimes throwing a blanket over a hard surface can do more for sound quality that an expensive mic. Shoot some test footage with audio and play around a bit.
