I know that Adobe InDesign is a popular program for layout, and have been wanting to learn it for the same reason. I'm sure you could layout in Photoshop or Illustrator, but as far as I know InDesign is somewhat of an industry standard. I don't know about printers or anything like that but there are some websites like Blurb that can help you print books. Maybe you can ask around local print shops to find out about making the books and ask some graphic designers about layout and such.

@durribie If you have adobe I would recommend you to use inDesign for the layout. Once you find a printer, they will supply you with all the size requirements. Then you can set up your document.

As far as printers, if you are just doing one for yourself I would look into snapfish or something like that. If you want to do a bunch and sell I would check out createspace.com I used them before.

        Goodluck!

Thanks for the speedy answers! It sounds like I should get my hands on InDesign. 🙂 I will check out both Blurb and CreateSpace!

I don't know if it helps but when you partner up with a printer, they could help / could give advice you with the layout and the things you should think about before sending it to them. I know a bit of thing about printing (currently a designer, previous a graphic designer with a lot of print work) so maybe if you have any questions here I could also be helpful if you want... but team up with a printer is probably the smartest thing to do for the result and learning curve...

@zombie-rhythm I have only worked with inDesign. That is the only program my work uses so they purchase the full Adobe Creative for me. I have no experience in any other programs.

adding to what has been said... while you get the book ready, do what you can to let those who would be interested in your book know about it. You can share a coupla pages, show process, make a video to talk about your art and your journey, what buyers can use the book for.... so by the time the book is available for purchase it's not sitting there collecting dust. I recommend you look into kickstarters and what artists do to make people aware of their books.
