@irina I have noticed that we have very similar taste! Do you have a particular connection with Italy? I've noticed that you have several Italian illustrators and Simone Rea in particular is popular here.

Will post my own list later...this thread is interesting and we can learn a lot from one another!

@lauraa No, only in that i am Romanian and the Romans came to Dacia, present day Romania, in the year 101AD (which war is on the column of Trajan wee) and so Romanian sounds like Italian in many ways and we are both in Europe. :))
No, no other particular connection apart from that really, but i really love European illustrators and a few very particular types of illustrations and styles. I love things all over the map and have a huge array of illustrators i like, but i tend to look at certain aesthetics that i resonate deeply with.

Well this is my ever changing under construction list of more than 5 πŸ™‚ . I don't necessarily like all of each of their works but some of them I do. I have only gone and analysed Chuck Groenink's illustrations. I hope to shorten this list and this list is primarily for Children's Illustrations. I have others for Environment, Character and Concept Art but anyways, thanks.

I always liked Bill Sienkiewicz for his expressive lines and bold movement even if his stuff is sometimes too gothic for my tastes. I also like Art Adams. I am learning newer artists, but no faves, yet.

Here are some of my top contemporary illustration favorites:

                    Sydney Smith
                    Beatrice Alemagna
                    Lisbeth Zwerger
                    Yuko Shimizu
                    Dani Torrent/Isabelle Arsenault/Daniel Miyares/Shaun Tan

I think I just cheated by putting four at the end 😜

Some illustrators that I have liked since I was a child are Trina Schart Hyman, Tasha Tudor and Edward Ardizzone. I'm sure there are others that I am forgetting!

I'm going to look up all your favorites as well. If you guys like them, there must be a good reason!

@irina Ok! There are a lot of Romanians here in Italy, so I have already figured out that the languages are very similar. And I will check out any illustrators on your list that I don't know, because it seems like we have similar taste, even if my drawings don't reflect it that much as this point. I'm still figuring things out.

What all of these lists tell me is that I am woefully lacking in my education when it comes to illustrators. I need to print out all of these lists and start expanding my acquaintance with people in the field. Thanks everyone.

@hannahmccaffery I have to add one to my list as it's something I've just recently discovered, while I've been researching the history of comics. And that's 8-Deer "Tiger’s Claw" from The Codex Nuttall. It's a historical illustrated story about a Hero King from around AD 700 set in the Oaxaca Valley. Don't know who the artist is. It's an amazing panoramic layout - a long comic book. I just love all the vibrant colours, shapes, symbols and the profile character style.

I want to add a few more too:

                                • Nicola Kinnear (she blends traditional and digital media really well and her work is beautiful) www.nicolakinnear.com
                                • Emily Gravett (her work inspired me to go down the children's illustration route) www.emilygravett.com
                                • David Litchfield (his work is really unusual and eyecatching) www.davidlitchfieldillustration.com
                                • Molly Idle (she used to be a character designer for Dreamworks and her work is just amazing, she uses colour pencils!) www.idleillustration.com

πŸ˜ƒ love looking at all these other artists that you've all mentioned too!

These sometimes change but the 5 I probably follow the most are as follows (in no particular ranking):

-Brian Cook- very cartoony style, but has made a name for himself drawing butts on things.

-Alex Pardee- this guy has been around for a while and I've only recently discovered him. Very disturbing yet colorful style.

-Eric Powell- created "the goon" comic series and draws with fairly profound thick lines. Excels at drawing imperfections in people.

-Matt Inmann- the webtoonist known as "the oatmeal". Draws in basic shapes but has fairly recognizable work.

-Chris Notbusch- this one is a bit of a curve ball, as he is a sculptor not an illustrator... But his attention to detail in texturing and anatomy is pretty awesome.
