Illustrator vs Photoshop in iIlustration
-
hi, I'm just wondering if certain illustration industries lend themselves more to Adobe Photoshop vs Illustrator, or if it just depends on your style? I have heard that Illustrator is better for web images because of the file size and scalability, but it seems like many of the images for book publishing are done in Photoshop... although it's hard to tell sometimes.
thank you -
@Bunchberry Depends more on your style than it depends on the industry. Every client I've had just asks me to do my thing and don't care about the details. The only time in my career I was asked to use a specific software was when I was working in mobile games, because everything had to be exported just so for the programmers. In book publishing, they'll ask you for final images in PNG or PDF usually, and you export those from any program that you like to use.

@NessIllustration thank you, that's great to know!

@Bunchberry I use illustrator to make stickers for die cutting but do most of my drawing in photoshop as I mostly draw bitmap images and tend not to draw in vectors.

It’s just preference usually. I am a huge fan of Illustrator, but most illustrators tend to favor Photoshop from what I’ve observed (which is ironic considering the names of the programs ).

@Sarah-LuAnn LOLLLL isn't it? Never really thought of it that way but it's so true! I think Photoshop was first envisioned as a photo editing program, but now it's being used by so many different professionals and is a favourite for illustrators. Illustrator despite its name is favored by graphic designers hahaha

@NessIllustration It does seem a bit ironic! I know when I first started learning Illustrator I thought it would be the greatest thing ever, since I love drawing so much.. but it is very different. It reminds me of my earlier days using GIS mapping software, with all the vectors and having to close polygons etc. It is obviously incredibly powerful, people do amazing stuff with it.. but it does feel different to how I naturally draw.
