      Hi Guys,

I just wanted to pop in to let you know that Lee, Jake and I are working on a big project. I can't give you all the details but it's going to be a multi module children's book class that will go into great detail on every topic of illustrating children's books. This project is probably going to take us a few years to finish but it won't take that long for you guys to start seeing some of it. That's about all I can share right now but we've begun production! Yay.

      REQUEST:

One of the hardest aspects of teaching is showing good examples of bad or beginning artwork to demonstrate the concept of correcting the mistakes. A lot of people are sensitive about having their work shown as an example of what NOT to do. However this is what I need to teach the "Drawing Children" section of the class. I need to be able to draw over work to teach the concepts and principles of drawing cute appealing children.

SO - I'm asking you guys to dig through your old work and give me permission to use your bad art drawings of kids. When I first began as an illustrator back in 1992 I was often told that my illustrated kids look like old people. I will try to find some of my own art to use but unfortunately due to my insecurities during that time - I tossed most of that early work. It kills me that I don't have it and I would caution you guys to at least keep a jpeg of your bad work because you'll never know if you might want to see it someday.

If you're willing to let me use your work please upload it on this thread and I'll download it to a folder for the class.

      Thank you!

      SVS Instructor

@Will-Terry I found this thing from about 10 years ago. I'm not... sure what I was trying to do exactly hahaha! What is even that pose? But I think it makes a pretty good bad example because the limbs are so thin and it certainly doesn't look like a kid ๐Ÿ™‚

So embarrassing to share this old stuff, but here ya go. You can see the poses are all wrong and the kids look like ghost babies, I had a lot to learn.

I knew I kept those old sketchbook and DA folders for a reason ๐Ÿ™‚

Lo and behold, the days when I drew kid characters that looked more like drug addicts (definitely NOT what i was going for at the time!)

I'll dig through my old comic archives and if I find any heinous examples I'll send em your way.

              @kylebeaudette LOLLL!
Actually it's quite a good idea to use a classic painting for this! Some of these Flamand ones especially, yikes! They did not know how to draw poor baby Jesus!

Oh boy! Hereโ€™s one. I made this about 3-4 years ago using watercolor. The perspective is all wrong. My kid characters have adult bodies. The teacher is too small though being in the foreground. Bad gestures. Too saturated colors. Bla! ๐Ÿคฎ ๐Ÿ˜… lol i was very proud when I made this but now... i can see all the mistakes. Please feel free to use this @Will-Terry ๐Ÿ‘

It doesnโ€™t work to attempt drawing children without knowledge of human anatomy (hiding most of a body under the covers can only go so far ๐Ÿ˜‰). And itโ€™s tough to fudge character consistency just with clothing or hair color ๐Ÿ™„...

Now if this were a story about kids trapped in mannequin bodies instead of a story about a rabbit who comes to life, it just might work!

This so embarrassing! This is a picture I actually turned into an Agency trying to get an agent. (I didnโ€™t hear back ) Sometimes there is a blessing in the blindness of how bad you really are. Thank goodness Will Terry and Jake Parker came up with SVS!

You have permission to use this beauty.

@lmrush It just needs to be tightened up a little... You are trying to balance the loose with the tight and I would assume you are afraid of getting too tight. That's a good thing in some ways because when you get too tight you take away the viewers imagination. There does need to be a good balance and that's the hard part. ๐Ÿ™‚

I was in a critique group meeting with @Tannie-Smith and @beckporter and I was showing them examples of my old art to prove that that I used to make some fairly bad things not very long ago. This particular image of mine (from only 3 years ago!) had us in tears. You are welcome to use it, or anything you want on my instagram feed @kristinwauson (hopefully something old ๐Ÿ˜‚ ). You have my permission to screen shot, or I'm happy to send you anything you want in higher res if you let me know what you want to use.
